robocop I have a 2013 Sahara that was bought new and only driven every other weekend. I have had it 2 years and only have 13,800 miles on it now. I went to the dealer for one of my free oil changes and the service manager heard a slight whistle sound underneath the motor at idle. he did not hesitate and said "looks like your water pump is failing".

My dealer has been amazing thus far and the manager asked me to leave it with them. He explained about the casting sand problem and simply wrote me a ticket saying he would need a few days for repair. So it looks like my routine oil change resulted in a few other repairs and I did not even have to ask.

My question is what all exactly can this sand effect? The manager asked the service tech if they could start work today and he said no problem however would need a while as the radiator, water pump, and heater core would need to be replaced. I was assuming only the water pump and maybe a flush of the system would be all that is needed and not the other parts. My heater seemed to be working just fine and the only real problem was that damn whistle sound every now and then. It did look like I had some dark sediment on the bottom of my coolant overflow tank but no real performance problems. He did say it would only get worse over time.

I am not complaining at all as I would rather it be done correct however reading through other threads it seems many have been ok after only replacing the water pump. Is it possible that Chrysler is simply replacing everything as a precaution now or is it really necessary to ensure a complete repair? None the less it is all being covered and I am happy to see my dealer (Hendricks Jeep) taking great effort to help me.

I think they should add a water pump in the recovery kit that came with the jeep!

Silverton34 Is there any reason not to keep driving while waiting for a pump?

The dealers replace the alternator first simply because Chrysler will pay to do it. They build additional business this way. It's a scam against Chrysler and causes extra inconvenience for the vehicle owner but it's money for the dealer. This crap drove me nuts when I worked for a dealer, they have no conscious or shame whatsoever.

Hoppy2 Reading this and other threads makes me want to keep my 2011 JK with the 3.8. Running fine with 58,000 miles. It has plenty of zip with the 3.73 gearing.

DallasJKU I replaced mine at 14K and now just turned 20K and its chirping again. I'm getting tired of replacing water pumps. WTF is wrong with these things??

2013 JK chirping issue

My JK has 4995 miles on it and the chirping has gotten out of hand. The dealer has at least acknowledged the issue and says it is the water pump bearings. Of course they are on backorder. No loaner, no eta when part will be in.

The funny thing is they say go ahead and drive it. That is all I need. Broke down in the middle of know where or on a family outing.

corvallisbattery 2013 JKR. Had my water pump chirp at me for about 20 second one day after I pulled the jet ski out. Hasn't doesn't it since. 2700 when it chirped.. at 3600 now

Tango Alpha Got my JKU back, noise is gone. They said they did a flush and replaced the water pump with an all new water pump. The invoice however said only replace water pump.

I'm with Tango Alpha. Always weary about buying Chrysler. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have this problem but that's why I got the lifetime warranty. It at least helps me sleep at night.

Bad water pump

It is a bad water pump. Im surprised they installed a bad one on your 2013.

Lusus_Naturae You may be on to something. I'd be curious to see if people who had the system flushed during the 'dash gurgle' or 'heater core' issue end up with bad water pumps. This is assuming that the fluid is completely flushed or filtered before returning it.

I know mine was flushed but I didn't stick around to see if it was filtered. I so far have no water pump issues at 9500.

You may be on to something. Mine only made noise at idle, disappearing when you revved the engine but coming back at idle. ?? Chrysler wanted the dealer to do a flush first and if it still made noise then replace the WP. The flush didn't solve the problem so they replaced the pump and no problem so far. Clearly there is an issue here with so many premature failures.

Tango Alpha I got a squeal at about 6000 miles. started off faint, barely noticeable. Then it got more loud to the point of embarrassing. Then I took it to the sand dunes and ran it hard all day long and it stopped. don't know why.

A week later and it started up again. slowly getting louder until it was unbearable. took it in to the dealer: water pump. They let me drive on it. I take it back in on Wednesday to have it replaced and the system flushed.

I hope this is not the start of a lot of problems, I really love this vehicle, but I was nervous about buying it because I have always been wary of Chrysler products. In fact, this is my very first Chrysler purchase.

Sucker Punch Dang, these issues really suck, but doesn't change my mind about ordering my 2014 JKU! I have to have it, bugs and all!

Same reason some 3.8s in 2008 had the ring gaps all lined up when they rolled off the assembly line.

Unfortunately automobiles don't work this way...but they still have to ship to meet their goals...and will just deal with the customers later.
Of course when you get a good, reliable car, you dont get to see how the service department. I have a hyundai santa fe, the most reliable vehicle i've ever owned. I let my girlfriend use it now, since i have the jeep. Sometimes i still use it to do things the jeep cant do. But the jeep has done far more things the santa fe can't do.

But i never had to visit the service dept at the hyundai dealer. They could suck for all i know.

Video games? Funny you mention that. I remember a few video games i owned that had bugs to the point of being COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. Infact, everything made in the late 90s by Bethesda Softworks.

I even had a game for the dreamcast that would overload the systems resources and start lagging out because of intense graphics. How in the hell was that ever acceptable, when it was a console game? WTF? If i wanted that crap i woulda played pc games.

Such a Bummer! Interestingly I had an '89 Cherokee that I put 220K miles on... I think I replaced 4 or 5 water pumps on it! Crazy that water pumps are still a Chrysler problem!

Bringing this thread back alive. 2013 w/ right at 10000 miles, and bad water pump. The whistle started at about 8,000 I would say, and due to work travels I was just able to get it into the dealer. It is going on a week in the shop, and water pumps are still backordered. Dealer tried to hang me out to dry w/ no loaner until I asked them to put Chrysler on the phone. I now have a rental on their dime. Also in for leaking top, and bad cruise control button. Sorry guys, but I'm jumping ship on Chrysler and trading it as soon as I get it back. Pretty sad that a part as simple as a water pump can cause such an issue, but my faith in Chrysler products is null and void. It's a shame because I otherwise love the Wrangler.

Old Dogger My 2012 has had two water pumps replaced the fist one was noisy and the second one leaked. There won't be a third one, because I just traded it in on a new 2013 with a manufacturing date of Dec 2012.

I also have a bad water pump, I called Corp. and they said that I didn't purchase a car rental plan..... I told her, Why would I need too? This is a brand new vehicle with 6K miles.

Tweak oh great. i am at 5500 miles and have a slight whistle. i always assumed it was the car in front of me since i only hear it at idle, but i am noticing it more and more often. think i should still go through with the lift i am installing in 2 weeks? surely they wont blame a bad water pump on a lift.

NMBruce It may not be anything, but reading some other post on JWF or other forums, there are a few guys complaining of heater cores going bad in new Wranglers. A couple have said they are finding "casting sand" in them, from when the engine was build. Could this be causing the water pumps to go bad?
Maybe a radiator flush & clean needs to be done at say 1000k miles to clean out the coolant.

2012 here. Had the exact same issue and the exact same "it's on back order, could be a couple weeks". 4 days later they got one in.
