MarkGLHS you gotta be kidding.

i'd say that little episode is worth a $1,500 reduction in the price.

Jgood738 That's a shame. Sounded like a good deal till the idiot owner did that. I wouldn't risk it either. Walk away

Walk away. I bet the owner's one of those that say "oh it's just a Jeep"...

SinfulDragon hhmmm.

The price is good, my 01 books for more than his original asking price in my area and I wouldn't think to sell it for less than 10K how it sits. So price is awesome.

I'd worry about the PCM if the fuse block is full of corrosion (the are about level under the hood). I'd worry about other sensors that have corrosion that you will have to deal with.

A Jeep with no top in a thunderstorm lets water in behind the radio and all that gets wet... go ahead... ask me how I know

Horn going crazy, I'm guessing the clockspring got wet and now needs replaced.

I don't know man, good price but water damage can take a long time to track it all down and make it right. I'm interested to see the consensus here myself.

bighamms developement

@all....gentlemen, i appreciate all the feedback. I just got off of the phone with my mech and the jeep checked out as far as the 78 point inspection was concerned. Here's the kicker...the owner dropped the Jeep off at my mechanic yesterday evening.....WITHOUT THE TOP ON IT. We had a sever thunderstorm move through last night and it's been raining for about 10hrs. When my mech pulled it in the bay it had several inches of standing water in it. When they went to pull the jeep out after the inspection, the horn went crazy and they had to end up pulling the relay to get it to stop honking. Upon pulling the relay, they discovered that the fuse box is complete corroded and will require a full replacement within the next few months (which leads me to believe it has been wet or submerged before). Aside from that, the only issue the mechanic noted was heavy rust build up in the radiator and suggested a series of chemical flushes or rad replacement.

So, here's where you all come in. Is it still worth the money? Should I cut my losses and keep looking? Do any of the above issues strike fear in the hearts of my (soon to be) fellow Wranglers?

MarkGLHS the inspection by the mechanic prior to sale is very smart.

have him also check the frame for internal and external rust. pull the carpeting up and inspect the floor for rust also.

and make sure your test drive includes speeds up to 70 mph to check for suspension issues and get it on dirt/grass and drive it in 4WD high and low.

hope it all checks out for you but if not there's plenty of used TJ's out there, never rush a purchase or you could get badly burned.

Notoriously_rob If its a new tranny dont worry about it- drip of oil is no worry either- check all ur lights, ac, etc. i got my 99 for 3900 with no rust, but a lot of small issues

BigDeaner If you trust you mechanic and he clears it, you should be good to go.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as its just a drip here and there and the motor sounds fine and tranny shifts good I'd buy it

Rubicon06Va Drip of oil is common, lots of drips per day is not good. Rear main engine seal is noted to leak/ drip oil. My 06 drips oil but slightly. Check for rust in frame if you live in rust belt.

bighamms first jeep (maybe)

Hello All, let me start by saying thanks in advance for any/all future help. I'm probably gonna ask a lot of questions.

Considering my first jeep purchase and have made an offer on the following:
2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport TJ for sale, 4.0L inline 6 with a 5 speed transmission. It's a 4X4, soft top, AC, Sound bar, AM/FM radio, aftermarket CD player, & aftermarket bigger tires and rims. Currently, it has122k miles and it has a dark blue exterior with black interior....Asking $7k, negotiated $6100

During the test drive the PO informs me that the tranny has been replaced. Also, mentioned that jeep sits in his 3rd car garage and hasn't been driven since last summer (needs a new soft top so it's understandable that he wouldn't drive it during the harsh Missouri winters) and this Spring he noticed a drop of oil.

So here is my question. Should I be concerned about the oil leak (i had him start it while i looked at the exhaust and no sign of burning oil during starting or while idling.
Tranny replacement - should this cause concern? (from all the research i've done i'm amazing at the number of Jeeps for sale that have had either or both Engine and tranny replacements).

At this point, the sale is contingent on a 78 point inspection from my local mechanic.

Is that anything else i should be aware or or look out for?
