jherrington Again, if becoming more fuel efficient isnt what you're looking for, you have no reason to be bashing these threads. If you don't have anything useful to contribute to saving gas, then you are defeating the purpose of this whole thread. Thank you, please understand.

TJandZJ All I will say to this surprisingly, annoying thread...is that when I first bought my TJ in December, I would check the MPGs after every fill-up. Quit that after realizing it will never hit the same range as my Honda. I accept my jeep for what it is, a cool, fun to drive, convertible, gas guzzling jeep.

doclouie One thing to eliminate any variation. Fill up the Jeep at the same gas station at the same pump. I have noticed that some stations click off sooner than others.

To me it boils down to common sense. When someone complains their jeep with a 4" lift and 33's gets horrible mileage. Never woulda guessed. Trying to shove a rubicks cube through the air with huge/ heavy tires. Common sense man, thats all im getting at. Stupid questions= stupid answers. On top of that why not use the "Search" button for mpg and see the half a thousand threads related to the topic.

Funny I said basically the exact same except said " buy a smart car" in some newbs thread and he got all butt hurt.

CarolinaBound To those bashing OP: Chill, having a "cool" jeep on this site is inversely proportionate to gas milage in most cases (save diesel). His post was made to show how there is nothing major you can do to increase MPG's.

To OP: Awesome. Hit up a mod to see if you can add edits afterwards for a few days as info funnels in. Like said before would add O2 sensors they always seem to be a culprit when people are getting 8mpg, tack on the turn-key-3-times code reader to I suppose.

I said nothing about the jeep being "normal" this thread include normal changes and extreme changes.

Duct tape over the rear fender flares, will increase gas mileage. Look at "hyper mileage" cars. The wheels are covered at the sides. The amount of air not going into the wheel well, is WAY more beneficial than the "roughness" of the duct tape you speak of. The duct tape would be a temporary apparatus anyways, if someone wanted to be absolutely serious about it, they could make something made of sheet metal.

I fail to see how the duct tape would be any less legal than people flying flags, and tape over there tail lights and even trash bags over their busted out windows.

I figure if i am north of 15-16 i am happy but i also know that is on a stock set up and will change when i get bigger tires.

It all depends on what your currently getting. Some are getting 15-18 and want more like a Prius. I get 18 and after many many years of driving wranglers do not expect it to get any better.

Atthehop One additional suggestion, do not exceed the speed limit and drive like your grandfather. Slow......... I know it's hard to be slower than an 18 wheeler on the interstate but that's life in a wrangler.

Ironhead Jed nice write up. i'll add that cleaning your throttle body and o2 sensors will help if they are dirty.

also, does anyone know what temp the mini-cats should be around? that would be an easy way to tell if your cats are getting clogged and choking your exhaust

Hello forum users! Of all the questions that come up from users, gas mileage is a pretty popular topic. If you are like most of us, you often look for ways to get better gas mileage. I'm going to try to break down the components to find, and better your gas mileage in your wrangler.

Figuring gas mileage
First of all, to find your gas MPG, clear the trip portion of your odometer when you fill up. Drive around as you normally do. When you fill back up, check how many gallons you filled in your tank. Now, follow the equation of

MPG= miles traveled/gallons filled.

Make sure you fill up the same way every time. Don't "top off" your tank. After the first click, you're done. That way, you fill at a consistent level every time. Also, if the jeep is not originally yours, changed tire sizes, or got re-geared, check your speedometer gear to make sure it matches your setup. This will ensure that the miles you travel are accurately recorded.

Aerodynamics

A big portion of getting better gas mileage, is the vehicle's aerodynamics. If air does not flow around an object very well, the object is known to have more drag. Now, what is the most efficient shape you ask? That's an air foil.
If you don't know what an air foil is, its most closely shaped like an airplane wing(no coincidence). That's really smooth and thin when compared to our jeeps which have sharp edges and flat front facing planes.

In fact, the jeep TJ is one of the most un-aerodynamic vehicles commercially produced recently.Vehicle Coefficient of Drag List - EcoModder

What's the first thing to hit the air when driving in your jeep? Your bumper. Wicked twist and turns of metal holding your fog lights and winch aren't very aerodynamic. Your stock bumper isn't too bad.

Lower your jeep.
Yep, I said it. Lift kits expose the underside of your jeep, which isn't exactly built for aerodynamic efficiency. The lower your vehicle, the better you are. Why do you think super cars are so low to the ground?

Take off your 33" tires. They're big, wide, and weigh a lot. Not exactly what you are looking for when you are trying to get better gas mileage. While we are speaking about tires, Get your axles re-geared to match your tire size.

If you're REALLY serious about trying to get the best gas mileage, tape over your wheel wells with duct tape. It prevents air from getting in there and creates a smooth surface for air to flow over.

Driving Style

If you're one to rev your jeep up to 3,000-5,000 RPM's and stay in the power band, you are using up a lot of gas. For best gas mileage, keep your RPMs at or under 2,000. Don't lug the engine and try to speed up from 35MPH in 5th gear. In that case, you use more gas than you would if the engine were spinning at a higher RPM. Plus, the extra pressure on the engine isn't good for it. Accelerate slowly when driving, and keep your top speeds at 60MPH. Over 60MPH, your vehicle (especially jeeps) uses a considerably more amount of gas because of the air block in front of your car.

Weight

Empty your jeep! Everything that adds weight to the vehicle, makes the engine works harder, which consumes more gas. Take The loose trash out of your jeep, your gym bag, tool box, the back seat, and other items. The less weight that the engine has to pull, the less it has to work. Just think about how much that body armor and front and rear bumper weigh. Especially that winch!

Engine

Get a tune up. Change your spark plugs, wires, air filter, distributor(if you've got one), oil, other fluids in the drive train. The better ignition of gas, the more efficient your engine will run. Make sure your injectors are all firing correctly, replace them if you want. Go bring your jeep to a mechanic and let him plug into your computer and see if there are any misfires.

In the end, there isn't very much we can do to make our jeeps more fuel efficient. Its hard when you start off with a brick and an inefficient engine. Keep your engine and oils fresh, keep your foot off the gas, and keep the weight out.

If you've got anything to add, or correct. Feel free to speak up. I encourage everyone trying to get better gas mileage to try one of the above ideas(especially the under 2kRPM engine speed) and see if you get a difference in gas mileage. If you do, Post it!
