This is precisely the kind of thing I want to do with my Jeep. My friend has an FJ with it mounted in a similar location. (FJ and Wrangler completely different I know.)

In the many times I've used my GPS, i've noticed that my onboard compass goes out of whack. With this mod that will no longer be an issue!

I'm going to try this when the weather breaks. Thank you! I'll post pics and/or progress.

cwood First time I mounted it it came down in the heat. Second time I did it more carefully and it has been through all sorts of weather and heat and no issue. If it came off again I would use a contact cement or something on the back of the disk.

bkw I had my nuvi 5000 mounted there in the same way and it was great while it lasted. Like you, I used an alcohol prep pad to clean the area then stuck on the disk. It held until the weather became a bit warmer and eventually gave way.

I also noticed that during pouring rain that if I did not remove the unit from the mount, it'd get wet too

Anyways, it's now on the windshield behind, but still above the rear view.

cwood I'm sure you could find one on line....the key is that they be smooth as glass....or you will lose suction. Clean the area with alcohol then stick the disk on and make sure you really seat it hard. Then make sure the suction cup rubber is really clean....and attach. Mine has been on for a few weeks and no issue.

Ape All the Nuvi's come with the smooth plastic disc. One side of it has the 2 sided tape. The other is smooth to attach your suction cup mount. If yours did not come with one, I'm sure you could improvise with any smooth plastic and two-sided tape.

buckscrape CWOOD how did you mount the suction cup to the header? I tried and because the header is not a smooth surface it will not stick?

dogsnhorses That is a great place.
Hubby has one he uses. If he isn't using it, it gets tossed in the middle compartment, when he uses it, he puts it in his cup holder.

Portable GPS Mount (My Solution)

I am picky about sight lines, clutter and wires in my vehicles....which makes using a portable gps a bit of a pain. I am very pleased with my solution and I have had a number of people say "thats a great place for the gps".

My criteria:

* Does not block windshield at all
* Is not obvious from outside (theft)
* No visible wires
* No dedicated plug into power outlet
* Switched power (vehicle on, GPS off)
* Easy to glance at while driving
* Easy to reach and hit buttons
* Does not block air from Heat/Cooling
* Work with hard and soft top.

I cut a bit of cardboard the size of my wide screen nuvi and kept it in the car for a while trying different places. I think my final spot is about perfect as it takes advantage of dead space above the rear view mirror.

Notes: The mount arm I used is from an older nuvi and there is a pivot on the arm between the suction cup and arm. This is key for the mount point. Nuvi's with the flip out antennae may not work. The only downside is that you can't do the upside down mirror mod. Standard power adapter routed in the trim down to the void on the right side of the dash. Tapped into the switched power of the left power outlet and a cig lighter extension routed to meet the power adapter and joined in that right side void (very easy routing with the glove box out. Easy to remove all the stock gps parts,
