Some oils mainly conventional will shear down in weight over time.
Example: you start out with a 5w30 conventional oil and after about 2000 miles, you wined up with 5w20. It depends on the oil as too how fast it will shear down "reduce itself to a lesser weight". After talking directly to Shell oil, my understanding from them is that all oils will shear down in time, but that the Synthetics are much more stable. So in answering your question, synthetic oils are pretty much shear-stable!

I know... I wanted to be the one who said it first this time. I was tryin to be funny.
I don't run amsoil in my street rig its just too darn expensive to change every 3k.
I have a friend who builds competition rock crawlers and he swears by it. The did an experiment where they ran 2 buggies upside down and the one with amsoil in it made it 5 min longer than Mobile 1. Its good stuff. I couldn't afford it because my 08 burned as much oil as it did gas. My new '12 seems to be better but I have the premium maintenance plan that includes oil changes for 4 years. Cant pass that up.

oOoYTSEJAMoOo Side question about synthetic....can I switch to synthetic after I have gotten my normal oil changes from the dealer? What's the benefit?

jadmt In an perfect world you would use 5-30 but have receipts that reflect 5-20 so not to risk a warranty issue and it is a fact being this is a Chrysler product that you will have to use your warranty so best not give them a reason to deny a claim.

wassup8687 Make sure the oil you choose meets the Chrysler specs and make sure to keep your receipts.

mcgee10 Maybe we can beat this oil post to death like most of the others. My Jeep dealer uses Mobil 1 10w-30 unless you ask for something else. There is nothing you can do to your jeep my dealer will not fix under warranty. I have seen him replace drive shafts even knowing the guy went to high with his lift and destroyed the drive shaft.

HK_Runner The main goal of 5W20 is fuel economy..even the manufacturers will admit to this. M1 actually had the chrysler spec- they had a spat, and M1 stopped carrying the spec on the bottles. The oil is still exactly the same.

Here is a tidbit- Jeep specifically warned European Compass and Patriot owners to not use 5W20 after doing the initial drain. It simply was not providing the protection needed in some engines.

So basically 5W30 provides slightly better protection and 5W20 provides slightly better fuel economy. Use what you want. I have only see two shear-stable 5W20s, and I don't plan on using any.

Using 5W20 will not void your warranty...it is the same engine that called for 5W30 a year ago before they needed some help for the CAFE fuel economy requirements. Toyota did the same thing. Their led techs also (I also know the Lexus Svc Mgr) said it is for fuel economy and recommended I stick with 5W30 in my V8 4Runner. Call Chrysler and ask them (a monkey rep will tell you to use what is on the cap...try to get to someone above that) but do use 5W20 if you're worried.

2five22 5w-20 synthetic works perfectly.

Trying to outsmart auto and petroleum engineers is pointless.

For the 2013 3.6, the recommended is 5w20.
Synthetics maybe used. Mobile 1 is not recommended by Chrysler/Jeep!

gunut I use any full syn 5w30 that's on sale.....penz, QS, Mobil 1,Valv, ect

Newt1234 I don't really know that much about oils etc but I wouldn't think a special oil would need to be used in hot temperatures. When running its going to be around 160 degrees from what I've read anyway. Unless your in some extreme heat I don't think your engine will be running any more hot than usual.

I would see needing to change something for extreme cold because of starting the engine while its cold.

Just my 2 cents

HK_Runner No need. If you are under warranty, do call the dealership and make sure this is ok. There has been no change to the motor but dealerships will use any excuse to get out of a fix. The 5W20 was chosen to increase fuel economy and raise their average across the Chrysler line. If they say you must use 5W20, just use a very shear-stable one. I would use a Pennzoil synthetic. They also meet Chrysler spec (more of a formality). In fact, the Jeep dealership usually carries a semi-syn Pennzoil that is impossible to find anywhere else. It is a very good oil.

HK_Runner 5W30. Pick a good shear-stable one. Pennzoil makes the yellow bottle, Platinum, and Ultra. Great oils. Valvoline is good too, as is Mobil 1.
