|brad98tj||I am not a firefighter yet I plan on taking my fire I and II as soon as I can. I'm 18 and I just graduated high school but I already have my emt. And I work at a big volunteer fire dept. It is a really nice place. I love working there and being an emt I feel like everyday I work I can make a difference in somebody's life and it feels good. We may still have to deal with the annoying drunk calls or whatever but I still feel like I make a difference.|

|Bobinayj||My girlfriend and I have been volunteer FF and EMS for 3 years. We're in a very small town, in a very remote area of New Mexico. The county in which we reside is larger than the entire state of Connecticut in area, yet, with a population of only 3,500 people. Our dept is all volunteer with 14 members. Rated ISO 6 with 2 class A engines, 1 tender, 1 quick-attack, 1 ambulance. The next nearest fire stations are 22 miles away in either direction. The majority of our responses are for mutual aid outside of our district. Because of the urban/wildland conditions where we live, we are all required to be trained in wildland firefighting as well. Structure fires often become wildland fires, and vice versa. The nearest hospital is 80 miles away, which makes for some very challenging ambulance runs, especially in bad weather when the helicopters can't fly. Still, a small price to pay to live out in this beautiful unfettered country.|

Was a volunteer for 1 and have been a paid firefighter for 6... I wouldn't even call myself a firefighter... more like an ambulance driver/attendant that has turnout gear. Department I'm with has 3000+ calls a year with 2995 of those being medical. LOL.. In my opinion the fire service went wrong when they took over EMS. This is about the only career I know where you go to school for 16 weeks and use the training for maybe 1 percent of the calls, but then you can go to a night class for 4 weeks and use that training on 99 percent of the calls.
I absolutely HATE the EMS part of the job, HATE the people that have a 100 degree fever, or a cough and decide to call 911 for an ambulance to take them into the hospital, then when you arrive on scene 4 cars are in the driveway, yet their family members seem incapable of taking care of them or taking them into the hospital. HATE running on DRUNK welfare people, HATE running on Spanish speaking only patients that get mad at me because I don't speak Spanish (I look Hispanic). When my mom came to America she didn't have a translator everywhere she went, she learned English. HATE bringing a PT to a packed ER, then placing the PT in triage, the PT gets mad and calls me "racist" because she's not at the top of the Dr.'s list for her cough that she's had for 5 days. HATE running 10 calls a shift with 7 of them being after 8pm and after a full days work at the department. HATE running on a DUI accident where the drunk has no injuries but the other car and occupants are all messed up. Then I have to go to court because the piece of S**T is trying to get out of his 5th DUI. Not to mention the at minimum 1 hour it takes to write each and every report for every single call, and we have to be very descriptive and remember every detail about the call and PT. Follow protocols in order for every single medication we give, or a PT assessment. If we don't do the report well then some lawyer can sue me, take away my license, ruin my life and my families life because some fuck head wants to make a quick dollar. All that so I can make maybe 37k a year (including overtime)which averages out to $12.80 an hour before taxes. Oh but I forgot to add in, if I call in sick or take a vacation day I lose my FLSA which is about 140 per pay period. Yes there are calls that are good, and people actually need an Ambulance, but those are few and far between. Had more fun being a volunteer than being paid. Ohhh, and a lot of people we pick up have not or don't shower and brush their teeth.
Sorry to be a downer but the EMS side ruined it for me. It sucks that it took 6 years to realize it, got burnt out around 4 years of EMS and now I'm 28. I applied for a job at a golf club cutting grass for 9.25 an hour just so I wont be stressed out, dread going on shift, and so I wont hate life because of my job. Even applied to wash cars for Hertz rent a car just because I feel happy reading the job description on the job listing.
Also forgot to mention that I got turned down from renting a house because I make to much money. Apparently making over 24k a year and NOT being on govt assistance disqualifies me from renting some houses.

|txsmokeater||Been a volunteer for 13 years. I also am an industrial FF, as I work in a chemical plant, been doing that for 19 years. Really like volunteering, I call it my "hobby", since I don't get paid but I like it. Small town of about 38,000 running over 2,000 EMS calls (I did my EMS stint for 8 years) and about 500 fire calls a year. We call car wrecks, auto alarms, dumpsters and such 'fire' calls.|
