350chevrolet buy the 4 banger and then buy my 4.0 /w 5-speed and swap it in lol. the difference between the 2.5 and the 4.0 is huge on and off road but imo the 4.0 just doesnt have enough so im going to a 6.0 /w a 3-speed th400. either motor you get, once you start modding it there really is no end.

marc1kim Keep in mind the 4 banger is slow on freeways. It's a capable offroader. Another downside is they come with the Dana35, which will have to be upgraded if you want bigger tires. Good thing is they come stock with 4:10 axles. If you go for a 4 best bet is to get one with a manual tranny, an automatic will not help the low power issue. The AX-5 transmission, is considered a light duty trans. I know people have done different, but IMO and I mean IMO the SE 4 banger is good for light to moderate trail use. I'd only go 31" tires, a lunch box locker up front (or limited slip in rear), a super 35 rear axle beef up kit, and two inch puck lift and not much more.

I just traded in my 99 SE 4 banger for an 05 LJ I6 and the differences on road are great. The LJ is a rocket compared to the SE. Comes with a Dana44 and other features that make it sweet.

njkeagle I just don't believe that you can't find a 4.0L. anywhere.

wetzie I have the 4 and then the 6 and this one is a keeper. You will have to pay more for the 6 but the difference will be out weighed when you consider what the 6 offers in power. I had the 4 for 4 years but with all of the hills here in MD it was tough on the engine.

jcf Don't get a 4 cyl' , in my opinion you will be looking at upgrading before long

AcidRaiN you should wait and get what you are wanting! Just my two cents!

wrusty wrangler If the 4.0 is out of your budget, save and wait. Dont settle for crap, which is my experience with 2.5s.

n8smitty regardless...if you want a 4.0 get it, or you'll wish you had everytime you think the 2.5 is not strong enough.

603TJ light trails, light highway duty... the 2.5 will be just fine for that. I have a 2.5 along with many guys on the forum, and you will be shocked what it's capable of.

birdhunter I dont think they made that many more if any more 4s
its just most want to sell their 4 cyl
and most are keeping their 6 cyl

turdhurdler I agree with everyone else about waiting for the 4.0. And as for you stating that you want to do high trails, it will quickly go from fun fire roads to progressively harder and harder trails. When you find the Jeep you are after, it will quickly suprise you just how capable it is. If the TJs you are finding are all the 2.5, maybe look at an older YJ. I am not sure how the vehicles last for rust in your area, but a YJ is a great platform to work with. Keep us posted on when you do find the right Jeep.

distortedtj The choice is always yours to be made bud.

It is weird to think it's hard to find a 4.0 jeep in Ohio though...."the factory is there".

Im getting tired of waiting!!!

Guys im trying so hard to hold out for a 4.0 but all i find are 2.5 and its pissing me off! Why did jeep make so many 2.5 when the 4.0 is so much better! Should I just get a 4 cyl and be done with it or will i be making a mistake. If it dosent already have a lift and tires and such i will add them its just so many people tell me the 4 cyl cant handle them. I drive occasionally on the highway and i would want to do some light trails. What should i do?
