|4Jeepn||Having run a detroit on snow covered roads.. it did fine.. no issues really to speak of. This was in the rear. Now having a lock-right up front and a limited slip in the rear... was a nightmare. Pulling everyplace..thus full time in rear okay... in front not so good.|

|hazmat||I have seen the eatons advertised on northridge 4x4 I believe . Is this a limited slip when not locked like the ected ? If not any one know where I can get a dana 44 setup w/ an ected and 4.56's ?|

That is why having a selectable locker, is more desirable, and safer, and all around, moe better.

|Triple88a||I'm a bit confused though why whould a locker break in snow? Wouldnt snow put less strain on it because its slippier than any thing else?|

|Jerry Bransford||As a Jeeper who loves the strength and simplicity of the Detroit Locker in his rear axle, go with an ARB Air Locker if you drive on ice or snow covered roads a lot.|

|hazmat||would a detroit locker in a 44 handle snow and ice well ? also would there be any issues w/ a mostly street driven jeep ? breakage , drivability etc. this is for a dd.|

Locking a stock 35 with 33" tires sounds a little risky to me. If you want to lock the rear I would suggest upgraded axle shafts to go with it. Depending on how much $$ you have I would suggest putting a lunch box in your front axle. It will hardly be noticeable on the street because your forward drive shaft is not engaged in 2wd. If you break the Dana 30 the odds of you still being able to drive home are higher than if you break the D35.
This will buy you time to save up and upgrade axle shafts and install a locker in the D35 all at once. I am pretty sure if you install the shafts and locker separately it will cost more and you may end up buying redundant parts you just throw away. If you upgrade the front lunch box later, you could probably sell it to help cover its cost. Say lunch box costs $250 you sell it used for $100, thats about $150 for a few years of a locked front diff, not a bad way to go! The one real down fall to throwing a lunch box into your front diff is I have read mixed reviews of how they handle on packed snow and ice in 4wd.

You can check your rear diff cover. If there is a plastic plug there you have the 35. If it is a steel plug you have a 44.
A lunch box style locker replaces only the spider gears.

|4Jeepn||Okay, now which rear axle do you have. If you have the dana 35 in the back putting a locker back there will up the chances of the axle going poof...and you being stuck on the trail. If you have the dana 44 then all should be well. However you may find that either a lunchbox locker such as a lockright, or if you have the cash an arb in the front will make a world of difference. Of course, they do sell upgradekits for the dana 35 that include a locker and stronger axle shafts which many people run with no issues.|

|MR.CLIFFORD||Another cheaper alternative is a lunchbox style locker like a no slip. They are easy to install and will do what you want off road yet will allow you no problems on road plus you don't have to have your gears reset.|

|Serg||I have 33" tires with the 4" lift. I want traction on all four wheels. I have been in a situation where one tire is off the ground and all power is reverted to the one loosing traction (slip differential).|

most love arbs. its an open diff when its not engaged so it's not noticeable on the road and you can engage it offroad any time you want. cost is high and you do have to have some sort of air source. only bad thing i've heard is that the air lines can break and then if they do you can't use the lockers until you get the new lines. a lot of guys on here run arbs and love them.
thats probably what i'd do if i was gettin lockers. im sure some others will chime in.

I have an 02 Wrangler Sport everything is stock except for a 4" suspension lift. Want to improve my off-road capabilities.....
What do you all suggest as far as getting traction to all 4 wheels?
