JeeperJake ....IF.....you're wondering about 'general Jeep' standing up to high miles....maybe this will help:

in 1978 I bought a 54 Willys Overland. Body/running gear in fine condition (even with 5.89) that a prior owner had put a small Ford 6 in place of the flat head 4. Hard to tell mileage as the old style odometer only went to 99999.9 before rolling over to 00000.1......I put about 30,000 on it in a couple years. Other than being of a decidedly 'olden days epoch mechanically' everything worked fine and felt like it would last forever.

Hint: if you want a DD, I'd advise against 5.89 running gear.

The sterling qualities of actual *metal* and exactly *right* design for the times, made it seem --along with painfully slow--otherwise invulnerable.

JKs IMHO are far better designed for use in today's world. If your other parts are serviceable, eventually a newer engine is a great 'mod'.

Worn out Jeep engines tend to use more gas, more oil, go ever more slowly, and with ever more noticeable 'unhappy engine' feedback.

TJTim316 My 98 TJ has 217,000 on it. 2.5l, still rocking and rolling. bought it in 07 had 145,000. haven't noticed much difference in power loss or driveability. haven't had to do anything at all to her, other than tune up, oil changes and exhaust. She wakes up a little noisey but settles down a little during the drive. Will be putting the timing chain in this weekend though. Looking into the reman engine swap. Anybody have some recommends on a good reman engine to go with?

derf When that engine finally lets go you should do a Hemi swap. I mean, you're pulling the engine anyway, why not put a decent one in to replace it?

Same here, along with driving it until the doors fall off. Oh wait, they're already off.

71k miles on my 2010 JKUR, probably put about 25k miles in the first year.

nitroz680 in 130 days of owning my jk i put roughly 9900 miles on it. Thats about 76 miles per day. extrapolate that out 10 years...i might have ~277,000 miles...

Lifetime warranty should help keep repair costs manageable....

Not quite as relevant as the thread title states, but now i'm subscribed

ohioviper My 95 YJ I bought new in 94 with a 2.5 had 285k on it when I sold it and that was 10 years ago and the guy still drives it. Im sure he has rebuilt the engine by now.

coelement777 a friend of mine has a 4.0 cherokee wirh about 260k on it and it still runs great. I am hoping to see similar longevity out of my 3.6 .

Lusus_Naturae Start a small savings for the Jeep if you can, $10 a week maybe. If you can do more, then add a bit more. Keep in mind this is future repair money, and add what you think you will need without hurting your normal budget. Replacing an engine isn't cheap, but it's better than a lot of car payments too - but - a bank will finance a new car a lot easier than they will finance a loan for fixing a broken car.

david.w.johnson My YJ had over 250,000 on it when I sold it. I was going to Iraq and didn't want to store it. The guy who bought it said it is still going strong five years later.

TJ has 105,000 on it when I sold it to come to Belgium. I miss it. Lady who bought it hasn't had any problems. I did routine maintenance and put new tires on it from 83,000 to 105,000.

JK just turned 80,000. I've been playing with mods and doing routine maintenance. About to get new tires.

rics1997 I had another Chrysler with the 3.8 in it and had 300K on it when I sold it. It was still running good. It went through oil for about a quart a month at 300 K but that was the only issue I ever had out of the motor. Transmission went about 200K and had to have it rebuilt but other then that, it ran great.

Omy.... I hope!!! I got the title a few months ago and could never imagine those payments again!!! I give her a good oil change. The upgraded one.

Dragonscape not the JK but the truck has 265,000 just had a tune up; 11 years old
You should be good to go if you keep up the regular maintenance, oil changes and such

boon4376 Maybe an engine rebuild around 200k - but ~150 is way to early to start thinking new engine just for the sake of it in my opinion.

I think the only reason to upgrade is when you encounter a series of repairs that cost more than 1-2 years of new car payments. Then I say it's new car time.. (Like if your transmission and engine both needed complete rebuilds or replacement)

Sahara1995 198k on mine. A little engine tick starting. It will probably go forever but I'm thinking of a new or rebuilt engine this winter.

Flyfisher76 I sold my 4cyl YJ with 160k on it 4 years ago and just saw it on the road the other day so i guess they never die...

Just keep on the general maintenance and it will last a long long time.

jkjeeper06 You could get a new or used engine much cheaper than a new jeep. Somewhere to the tune of a few thousand depending on age and mileage. If the jeep is good and you don't want to do payments that's a good route. Although, like others say you can really just fix what breaks. That engine has tons if life left as long as you keep up with maintenance

dawhitesJKU they just fix whats broken. Regular check ups/maintenance, and you'll be fine. Most of the time that they do get a new engine is because its an upgrade. Hemi.

Within 07 and 156,000 miles, you can bet your rear I love to drive. I'm just wondering how much longer since it's finally paid off (God I could never do this payments again :x) That I will actually get out of it. Do people really just buy new engines? I've also noticed a lot of new Jeep owners on the form and since I'm new here, I'm wondering if there is a form for older jeeps
