with my 97 tj, 4cyl I filled her up when the odo is at 180 miles, usually I had 10 /11 gallons to fill her up. only 2inch lift and 31's
I get what I get, doesnt really matter to me

I love reading all the MPG posts on here, especially the ones where people talk about the bad MPG on the Wranglers.
I am trading up to the Wrangler for better gas mileage, lol.
Well, not for that reason (obviously), but it is a nice side benefit

|dwells in Texas||A newbie here. Glad to be on-board the forum. I have a mileage comparison some might find interesting. Picked up my '13 JK Unlimited with 3.73 gears and 32" Goodyear Wrangler hiway treads and took a 700 mi. round trip to S. Texas for work (petroleum geologist for 30+ yrs. and owned many 4x4's). Trip was mostly flat to rolling prairie, interstate with 20 mi. of ranch road to the well location. Kept it under 70 for "break-in". The EVIC read-out averaged 20.2 MPG for the trip. After this trip, the dealer changed the wheels to AEV 17" Pintlers and Yoko. Geolander A/T-S 285x75x17 tires (much heavier tires, 32.8" diam.-no lift needed). Also mounted AEV Moab style F&R bumpers which may have added a pound-or-two. Repeated the trip a week later and the EVIC averaged 17 MPG. Actual calc. mileage was about 3/4 MPG less than EVIC read-out on both trips. Noticed on both trips mileage fell off rapidly above 65 MPH. Seen several questions about Jeep mileage and thought this might help.|

My employer bought a few Honda hybrids for fleet vehicles. Most of the people driving them are getting less than 40 mpg. They have no power, and 1 of them already needed a battery replacement (around 50k) that the dealer wouldn't warranty. Total cost was around $5k.
I use my Jeep for work. I drive on a lot of seasonal use roads, private roads, washed out roads. The type of driving I do murdered my GTI. I would pretty much have to rebuild the front end in that thing every year. Sure I get less mileage with the Jeep, but it can handle driving on crap roads.
The point I'm making is that it doesn't matter. There are tradeoffs with everything. If the mileage on a Jeep is so offensive, then go buy some appliance car that gets good mileage and be done with it.

|rocknrolljeeper||I realize this is an old post, but I thought I'd add my two cents here. I'm getting 14 MPG on my '01 TJ 4.0L if I keep my foot out of it. The mileage is a little lower than I naively expected (I just recently bought it), but I'll deal with it. After all, it's a Jeep, first and foremost !!!|

|termite||My Jeep gains 20MPG when I take the top off, and another 10 when I take off the doors. Why? Becuase I stop giving a crap about MPG and am too busy having a damned good time just driving around.|

I believe it's not the jeeps fault for poor mileage as other factors are at play... Winter gas is a big one for Canadians who reside away from the US border. Environmental conditions is a another. Cold starts, idling to warm up. -30c weather on average where i live. The only thing im doing to make my jeep abit more efficient is swapping out the O2 sensors as they are are the point of needing to be changed. Another point i would like to contribute is the owners responsibility, maintenance is key as well. Regular oil changes, tire pressure at optimal levels, spark plugs as well. So for those out there who blame jeeps as being pigs on fuel, they are but they can be much worst if the owner doesn't do there part too.

|Rubicondon53||True enough, but at 2,000 RPMs the 4.0 develops 170 ft lbs of torque... The VW tdi @ 2,000 RPMs is around 240 ft lbs of torque, and the cummins 4bt is over 300 ft lbs of torque at 1700 RPMs..|

|theginger969||well the reason they get bad gas mileage is that jeep motors put that well needed low end torque to get you through that which is impossible for other land dwelers can't. It's a jeep we can go anywhere|

|Rubicondon53||There is no excuse for the jeep, or any other vehicle to be getting poor fuel mileage, and to me, anything below 20 to 24 MPGs is poor. VW figured it out long ago. 42 to 50 MPGs, using diesel engines. The horsepower and torque ratings of gas engines are baselined at 3400 RPMs.. Diesel HP and torque ratings are all baselined at 1700 RPMs and as low as 1400 RPMs.. The math's very simple, since a diesel is at peak performance at around half the RPMs of gasoline engines, our CRD with 4:11s gets 27 mpg average, nearly double what the Rubi gets.. think what the CRD would get with 3:73s or even 3:27s.. Hmmmm.. When the motor goes in my Rubi, I'll be switching to diesel...|

Yea, brick shape does it. I drive a focus for summer mileage, my YJ is for fun, and winter driving. I don't drive like a banshee in the Jeep, its not meant for that. Its meant to give a fun ride, and get you through hell and bring you home again.
Regular oil changes, good maintenance, gets your mileage acceptable and if you think about the longevity of these vehicles, its worth it.

I bought my '99 jeep wrangler sport new, I ordered it and took delivery in Oct of '98. Its an automatic (Wife didn't want to learn to drive a stick...)
When I had the stock 225/75-15's I would average 18 - 19 miles per gallon. I switched to 30/9.50-15's, my mileage dropped to a pretty consistent 16 mpg's... city driving, and I get that now.
I've never considered it a "brick". It is what it is. I knew what the estimated MPG's were before I ever bought it. I can't complain as it's met that target the past 13 years.
The only thing I can complain about is the amount of "rust" that has popped up on the frame and around my body mounts on the tub. The rust is coming from the inside (under the paint) out.

My gas mileage isn't actually much worse than my car. I get 20 - 22 in my '08 BMW 535i, and 16 - 18 in my '02 TJ.
And, the TJ is much more fun!!

Let's see... they've got the aerodynamics of a cardboard box, they're heavy, they're geared kind of low, the 4.0L engine, while ironclad, isn't all that efficient, and maybe -- just maybe -- some of the people who drive them are, shall we say, "enthusiastic".
BTW, my 2000 TJ (4.0, auto trans, hard top, totally stock but with Kenda 30x9.5x15s at 27 psig) gets a whisker under 20 mpg running (nominally) 65 mph highway. Around town, with the front panel of the top off, it drops down to 16-17.

But at 4000 miles I put Mobil One oil in my new (2011) Rubicon and saw a nice improvement in MPG!
Also at 55 MPH on expressway I see 26 to 27 MPG

Why do Jeeps get bad mileage? Well let's see, these things come readily to mind....
4WD power train
Big, heavy, fat tars (that's tires for y'all Yankee types)
Short answer is that almost everything that makes the Jeep a good offroad performer hurts gas mileage. Just the way it is.
