An old FJ is about the same as a Jeep. It'll only be as good as the Chevy/Ford/whatever parts you put on it
The best part about having something there's not a lot of aftermarket for is at least you won't have a bolt on queen. Learn to weld and fab your own shit.

But the rest of the comments don't sound logical to me. You said they are money pits with no chance to get your money back and you think it is worth 3k more than you paid for it.
I don't see any reason why the old FJ would be less of a money pit than any well maintained TJ. Your TJ may be a money pit but I've had two and they only needed routine maintenance like any used 4x4 vehicle would.

Autos are far from and investment unless you pay $$$$ to begin with and even then its high risk. insurance, inspections, reg., wear and tear, maint. storage etc..... Even a brand new car is a money pit!! the confusion is I have a new car its so great and reliable...WRONG you have a freakin payment that's reliable? Unless you dump 4 or 500.00 a month in an old car its not a money pit. The FJ is OLD all old things need TLC (including us lol) In my opinion a new car is ok for about 7 years then things seem to come in 3's. I imagine you will be paying a few grand on top of selling your jeep for the FJ invest that few grand in your jeep and love it

Having driven and ridden in plenty of old FJ's- and making a recent TJ acquisition- I'm going Jeep hands down. It's sturdy enough to do almost anything, with enough modern convenience. All the comments about parts availability are true. When you break something on your FJ, do you really think you're going to walk into Advance Auto in BFE and find exactly what you need?
If you live in the real world and work for a living, cars can be either 1) an investment in experiences and happiness, or 2) a financial investment. But, you can never have both.

|chazman||Just sold my '68 Bronco and went All Jeep. I still love the Broncos, but unless you do all your on fab work and have a ton of money, they just aren't great dependable daily drivers. Parts are a pain to get sometimes too. The reason I like the Jeep, is because parts are EVERYWHERE . And if I screw it up, it isn't a limited number of a classic that can't really be replaced. If I win the lotto, I will have another stable of horses, but for me now....it's a Jeep thing|

You you want to sell one money pit for an older most likely even less reliable money pit. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Anything that leaves payment will cost money. 4X4's in particular, it's always something. All you're doing is jumping from one frying pan into the other. Sony sell the jeep and buy an fj in hopes of alleviating your current issue. Buy it because you want an fj. If you're doing it because of other lost causes I stated above you'll be even less happy when the fj breaks and you're in the same boat going I would've rather fixed the jeep.

|SurfKaster||I'm a fan of the old FJs myself, but I'd wager you'd be trading one set of problems for a more expensive set. They're sweet, but 7k most likely won't buy a solid DD unless you'e looking for a driveable project. Well kept/restored FJs hang out in the Defender price range.|

Driveability is subjective. My grandparents drove to California in a Model A.
I've never owned an FJ, but if it's anything like my old Bronco, it'll definitely have its quirks. The old Bronco was a pain in the butt, but the thing was a tank. I don't regret it one bit.
I'd suggest educating yourself about FJ's. Check out forums, learn what common problems to look for. As long as it was mechanically sound, I'd be perfectly happy driving one. I do know one thing you'll have to get used to, if you buy it. People will call it a Jeep. People called my Bronco a Jeep. Correct em or just grumble under your breath.

I assume the drivability of the FJ is pretty bad compared to a TJ or even a YJ?
For those that don't know I'm talking about the OLD FJ like in the picture below not the nasty ugly new version.

|Duke-TJ||I think OLD FJs are cool, but Jeeps have an almost endless supply of replacement/modification parts, and probably alway will. I don't plan on ever getting rid of my TJ or my CJ, mostly because I know there'll always be parts to fix/upgrade them if I need them. Good luck with your decision. I say keep the Jeep!|

If you want to invest, buy a collectable car and keep it put up out of the elements, never drive it and wait for it to appreciate in value. With very few exceptions, you never get back what you put into a vehicle.
If you want an old FJ, go for it. I think they're neat old rigs and wouldn't mind owning one. I've owned an early Bronco and loved that thing. My dad has an old Scout with halfcab sitting in a field. I wouldn't mind messing around with it someday.
The point is, vehicles are money pits. Period. It'll be a love/hate thing even if it's your favorite car in the world. Buy what makes you happy. When you get tired of it, sell it and move on. That's what a true auto enthusiast does. It's sort of like a disease
If you're having trouble coming to terms with your "disease" and trying to justify the amount of money you spend, I can't help you with that. The best advice I have is anything you do to a vehicle, you do it for you. You do it because you want to. Simple as that. Non-diseased people will never understand, so you don't even try to make them understand. Let them shake their heads at our silliness. Poor bastards

Thinking about selling my TJ to buy an FJ
My TJ has a tired engine,splitting door and a bad syncro going into 2nd. It just seems like these things are $ pits with no chance of getting your money back. I paid $4k for the TJ. I put a Zone 4.25 with $400 in rubber on it. I assume I can pretty easily get $7k out of it?
Besides being a better looking machine and ergonomic issues why keep the TJ when an OLD FJ just GAINS value?
