I was originally in the market for a TJ, but an opportunity presented itself for an 08 JK Rubicon with 20k miles that I couldn't pass up. The Jeep has over 40k miles now and I love the thing.
Regardless of what everyone says about the drive train, I haven't had any problems with it. It's definitely not my BMW, but it isn't lacking in power and appears to be simple to work on and maintain (though haven't had to do anything to it other than change fluids and filters so far). I've driven TJ's with the 4.0 and don't notice a difference in power. I feel the 3.8's get a bad rap because the 4 door Jeeps are too heavy for that engine with stock gears and tranny, but on a 2 door it's fine with the 4.10's. The vehicle is a tank and goes anywhere. The only weak link on the JK is that the transmission on the 7's to 11's are prone to overheating (usual Chrysler faire). As a preventative measure I have a transmisson cooler on mine (which Chrysler should have included stock but isn't an expensive mod) and have never had an issue even on long inclines on hot days.
You can't go wrong with either. Just wait for one that you can't pass up, pull the trigger, and enjoy.

Pentastar and new tranny came out in 12. The new tranny makes more difference than the pentastar IMHO. The new engine only produces more power at higher rpms. A good tune (Diablo) will do wonders to wake up a pentastar.
I have a 12 JKU (was a rubi, now a frankenlift with d60s and arbs). My most recent purchase was an 06 lj. The JKU is just too freaking big. I wanted a more nimble trail rig. They JKU also weighs a lot and that weight has made crawling... interesting at times.
The sheet metal on the JKs is incredibly thin. I would not recommend taking a body panel off. My lj definitely has thicker sheet metal.
Both the TJs and JKs have their pros and cons. My LJ will have separate tie rod and drag link (Teraflex D60 front). I have never liked the factory setup where the drag link attaches to the tie rod.
With the TJs getting older and JKs being replaced soon ('16?) There should be some deals on TJ parts. I would not be surprised to see some TJ inventory cleaning over the next few years. Could mean some lower cost mods.

I have one of each....
97 TJ and 09 JKUR, and they are quite different.
The TJ is a sturdy, simple and capable vehicle, the JK is capable, but does come with more creature comforts, which are nice.
I don't wheel as agressive as I used to, so the JK is suiting me well, I do like the option of taking the JK on a long road trip, not really something I would consider with the TJ.

|Shoe||I think if I was to buy a JK, it would only be brand new with the Pentastar engine. I'm pretty sure the engine in the earlier JK's was a Mitsubushi and it seems like every car I see smoking has a Mitsubushi engine. The Pentastar is claimed to have better gas mileage, lots more power, etc.|

I also spent a brief time deciding between the TJ or a new JK.
in the end it came down to the TJ's small size, simplicity, and sturdiness. The JK's are very nice though, maybe a tad too nice?

Decided in 11 to go all the way and get a new JKUR; drove all the way to Victorville Motors for the exact model we wanted. Great rig, drove it to Big Bear and struggled up the mountain. Shrugged it off as "I guess it's a JK thing to not have enough power to pull the hat off your head" lol. But it trailed the Historic and little John Bull just fine. A great car. Car.
Just swapped it for a new Ram. Just got tired of no freakin power/42RE gear-hunting 3.8 slugfest. A great car. Car.

|jeepgal19||They don't wave, probably because they aren't true jeepers?? There should be a series of tests you have to pass to purchase a jeep. And in my opinion, they should only come in stick-shift. If you're taking the twins to soccer practice after going grocery shopping in your automatic, you should have it taken away from you.|

|jeepgal19||Thanks, folks. I think I'll def stick with the TJ. I think I'd feel better spending money to restore older parts, rather than fork over the money for unnecessary new jeep things. I guess I tend to be a purist when it comes to the wrangler. IMO, I want my jeep to be a metal box. If I wanted luxury, I'd buy a luxury vehicle. Decision made!!|

I liked the "look" of my JK and the trail capability was very impressive, but my vote still goes to the TJ.
My 2008 JK burned about 2-3 quarts of oil a month. This is not a minor issue. Its a very serious issue that chrysler seemed to just shrug off. I also wasn't impressed by the power the earlier JKs had. The plastic bumpers and thin sheet metal were also lacking.
My opinion buy a TJ or a later model JK. At least the later models will have the more powerful motor and updated interior.

If someone is stuck between a TJ and JK I would suggest a LJ!
I got my 05 last year for 15K but with 57K miles so keep looking don't get one with 100K for that price...
TJ or JK is more your personal preference, I like both but I like the TJ better
TJ as the 4.0 I6 and is more rugged, simple to work on, carefree when dirty inside and out vs JK has more modern interior and would make the owner more less care free and keeping it clean especially if you have the dash navi system and power windows etc. I haven't heard of JK owners bedlining their tub etc. Caught in the rain? oh well it will dry up. but in a JK your like oh crap!
Along with the extra plasic I heard the JK body sheet metal was thinner than the TJ's to keep the weight down I'm not sure if this is true but that would mean dents would come more easy.
factory steel bumpers on a TJ of course is better, someone rear ended me and their whole front was smashed in vs I just have paint on my bumper and barely bent the cross member, I still didn't get it fixed and you can't tell I was in an accident unless I point it out.
But you can always buy steel after market bumpers for a JK

Many will argue that '99-'04 were the best TJ years. Also the first few years of the JK had some minor issues (like burning oil). But you are going to get lots of opinions on this.
Regardless if its a 97 TJ or a 2014 JK..they are awesome. I personally am waiting for the Diesel motor to come out in 2015 before I take on a Jeep payment.

2000-2006 vs. '07-'14
Hey, guys. I'm looking for some help deciding whether to buy new or used. This will be my 3rd wrangler. I previously owned a 91, then a 2000 sahara. Got terrible resale on both of them. I'm not totally sold on all the changes they made in 2007. Plasticy and what-not. Pros and cons?? I'm looking at 2006 models, however, most are about 15k, with over 100k miles. Should I suck it up and buy new or are the new models less sturdy?
