Thx. Have a "seepy" power steering pump. Will replace eventually. When I get a few hours open in my calendar.

OEM or aftermarket unit recommended?

Jerry Bransford Power steering fluid was used in all 2002 and older TJs. The switch to ATF+4 for the power steering system was made in 2003 when the switch was made from the old Saginaw steering system to the current Mercedes steering system.

jwm1986 I was amazed back when i did it as well. It's kind of like being off the ground all the time, just no resistance at all even with 33's!

Dewry636 Yup... That's what I used. It held almost a quart. It's all back together now.... and WOW what a difference. It turns so much easier and smoother. That will take some getting used to.

jwm1986 I second (or whatever) that you need standard power steering fluid for that box.

Dewry636 I finally got my hands on a factory service manual.... The 97 calls for Power Steering Fluid. The 2003 model calls for Auto Tranny Fluid.

Peepers I used to work preventive maintenance on school buses, basically just fueling them, adding oil if they needed it, filling wiper fluid, changing light bulbs, and checking for items that would require the bus to go into the shop before its next service interval.

We used ATF whenever the power steering was low. Not sure if its appropriate for your use, but thats what we used.

Dewry636 ok, thanks. I wasn't sure what year they started using auto tranny fluid in the power steering pump.... Power Steering Fluid it is! Thanks again.

Hardermods Since both vehicles from the factory take power steering fluid I would stay with that, I'd be unsure if the seals in the durango gear box, or the TJ pump would be eaten by ATF.

As far as the amount, get a few quarts top it off, work it back and forth a few times to get the air moved out then check and top off if needed. It varies from vehicle to vehicle due to differences in pump, reservoir, gear box and coolers. since your combining 2 different models I'm sure you wont find an exact amount for yours online.

Power Steering Fluid or Tranny Fluid???

I have a 97 wrangler and I am doing the 1999 Durango Steering Gear Box Swap. Do I replace fluid with Power Steering Fluid or Auto Transmission Fluid? Also, how much fluid does it hold roughly (2qts good?)
