Here's a little photo walk of what I did
I bought some rust/paint remover pads from Eastwood and tried it on a spot after I thought I'd busted the rust pretty good with the wire drill head. Turns out some surface rust was creeping under the paint, so I used the Eastwood pads to strip most of it, it was old and a bit bubbled.
I bought the pads here... Poly-X, Paint & RustRemoval Disc 4.5in Cup Style
I recommend at least 2, they get eaten up pretty good, but do a great job with relative ease. I got mine last week, they had a sale at 5 bucks a pop. Did a pretty decent job had to run it over a few tougher spots a few times...
Once I was done I used my wire drill attachment and elbow grease to hit the corners the pad couldn't reach, then used some packing paper and masking tape to block off the area and hit the whole thing with Eastwood Textured Rust Encapsulator. I got that here... Eastwood Textured Rust Encapsulator Black Aerosol 15oz
Two coats, followed the directions on the can. Turned out really well, so well in fact I intend to do more of the frame with it when I get around to getting the tires off to paint them soon. Right now my priority is getting my new nutserts in and my skid back on

|Ironhead Jed||Agreed, they can be a pain, I soaked mine in a penetrant every other night for a week and used a torch. Got lucky and had no issues|

Definitely...I failed to do so. No biggie, grabbed the jack and unjacked myself, but you don't want to risk it
Depending on the rust to the skid bolts, it could be a chore in itself to remove it. 2 out of 6 of my bolts snapped, and 2 wouldn't budge at all. Turned out the previous owner had used cheap grade 5's. Took me an angle grinder to get them out, then had to grind off the nutserts and get replacements, which arrived today

|Gelinasty||KK. So from the sound of things i dont have too much to worry about as long as the inside of the frame isn't worse then this, and i take care of it with a wire brush and paint.|

|Brig||Dealing with this myself currently. Dropped the skid and hit the frame rust with a wire brush drill head, thoroughly. Waiting for the weather to clear, then I'm going to hit it again to knock out any surface rust and hit it with a rust inhibitor and paint. Did the same to my skid already, turned out well. Yours doesn't look too much worse off than mine, should be easy enough|

drop the skid and check the frame there, its usually the worst. if its really bad, there are weld in repair kits. if you can hit it with a grinder and get the rust off, do it, then hit it with some paint. the inside of the frame is the most important as it usually rusts from the inside out. Eastwood is having a sale right now and their internal frame coating is on sale for $13 a can instead of $20. I just grabbed 8 cans to do 2 jeeps.
it is very important to get all of the crap out from inside your frame rails. best way i have found is park on an incline and put a hose in a hole near the front of the frame, let it run until the water is clear at the other end, repeat on the other side.

How concerned should i be of this
a) how concerned i should be of the rust under my jeep and
b) the best way to take care of it
