|harleydragon||400 was the most heavy duty of the older chevy auto trannys.came from the factory primarily behind big blocks and then diesels,although the diesel had a different bellhousing bolt pattern.350 is what people normally use in jeeps because they are almost 3 1/2 inches shorter than the 400. 400 takes a little more power to operate than the 350 but if you have the room it is one heavyduty tranny|

The turbo 400 is a GREAT 3 speed trans, you will have NO issues with it coming apart if its built right.
I know drag racers that SWEAR by this trans.

Here are pics of the transmission. As soon as I can positively ID the unit I will replace the gasket and filter as well as replacing the missing cover. I'm all ears.

A new set of wires, plugs air/oil filter for it are next on the agenda. Then ID'ing the transmission so I can order the appropriate pan gasket (it's leaking).
The automatic gearshift selector is some kind of hokey homemade thing so I ordered a cheap Z-shifter as a replacement (please don't flame me for that I know it's not the greatest but on a budget).
The radiator is ridiculously small for the Jeep as well so a replacement is on the menu as well.

Take a pic of the balancer, if its the small balancer, its a 5.0L, if its the bigger one, its a 5.7L, however that IS an older engine and it could be a 327 or 400, with an HEI conversion (very easy as HEI is GM smallblock native, one wire hookup upgrade).
The tag in your second picture looks like a re-builders marking for machining (Old School), how much was cut from crank, piston bore and deck milling information.

It'll be a flat spot right in front of where the passenger side head bolts on. The engraved numbers may be covered in paint so might have to scrape around to see them.

Looks good a little cleaning and and tune up and it'll look real good. get some pictures of the rest of the drivetrain and we might can tell you some about them

|rykemc||It is not a tag but part of the block that will have letters and numbers stamped in it. Right in front of the passenger side cylinder head. You will most likely have to remove your alternator and possibly the bracket if it bolts to the end of the head.|

|Cashcrazy||Looks like a 305 or 350. They are basically the same block with the 305 having a smaller bore. IIRC the 350 had a 4" bore. there is plenty of info on google for identifying those.The question is what trans/tcase did they use?? Ill take a guess... Th350/np208. Take a shot of those. The tcase will have a tag on it probably and again plenty of info on those chevy products.|
