|back in the game||make sure you have the correct amount of fluid in the transmission as over filling it can lead to overheating as the system is only designed to cool "X" amount of fluid.|

I don't have much problem with O/D going in and out since I regeared. It is correct that O/D going in and out can generate heat, but its nothing compared to being in 1st or 2nd for long periods. On the 42RLE transmissions (not speaking of the Pentastar jeeps, I don't know about those) When in 1st and 2nd, the TC is never locked, the computer doesn't allow it. So there is always slip and slip is heat.
The 3rd and OD are the only gears that are allowed to lock, there are other parameters in the computer that control if they are actually going to lock, they aren't always, but those are the only ones that can.
ANYONE wheeling in a jeep should invest in some kind of transmission temp gauge and a cooler, because the only real protection against a meltdown is being able to see whats going on.

Just installing the transmission cooler will not solve the issue 100% in all cases. How do I know? It didn't for me!
I did a lot of research and the other part of the total solution is to lock O/D out. Since doing that, I've never had the issue again. Apparently shifting in/out of O/D causes increase in temp (seems to be the common reason I've found in research)
Even after installing a transmission cooler (professionally installed), I had the hot light light come on again.
Both times my hot oil light came on was driving in 2 wheel drive up mountain on gravel roads (1st time was forest service road, 2nd was county road goutside of Cherokee NC - temp was about 20 degrees cooler on the mountain than in cherokee, awesome cabin with great views)

My Jeep is up to date on the old recalls... I was curious if this was something fresh I didn't know about.
I had them get everything up to spec right before I started lifting things and replacing bits :-)

What really sucks is yesterday we had to buy a new car for my wife (2013 GMC Terrain). We got a great deal on it because I'm an ass when it comes to buying cars.
She totaled her Santa Fe in a really bad wreck a few weeks ago...thank god she "walked" away from it with broken ribs, bruised (partial collapse) lung, and lacerated spleen. Thankfully she was home within a few days and is in good shape now aside from her ribs in constant pain. Nothing you can do about rib injuries. I think I may have mentioned that earlier.
When it rains it pours a I guess. I guess we'll also have to hold off on our plans to start looking for a new house for a while.
The '08 did have a recall for coolant lines. I had mine put in last Wednesday.

Well, the cooler is a good idea no matter what. I tested my new cooler last week in the 100+ Heat on a hour long steep climb in 4low and it never went over 212 degrees (240 being the beginning of the back-off zone).
Nothing will keep your tranny alive longer than keeping it cool.
But Damn I'm sorry you had to bury so much cash in there to fix it...

Okay, update now that I've got my Jeep back.
First, the total damage came to $2900 including parts, labor, and warranty.
The invoice of work done,
1. rebuild transmission with master overhaul kit
2. Kevlar sealing rings, bushings, seals, gaskets
3. thrust washers, fiber clutches, steel clutches
4. rebuild clutch packs, valve body with components
5. intermediate clutch band, power flush cooler lines, filter
6. rebuild torque converter
I had the torque converter replaced this spring but the tranny wasn't opened up. Had they opened it up, they probably would have found the debris from the first converter was filling up the coolant lines. Obviously that wasn't found and the second converter did the same as the first (first was probably faulty but no way to prove that) and threw debris into the interior of the tranny, clogging coolant lines and running up the heat in the tranny.
I'm planning to add a tranny cooler despite having a virtually brand new tranny now (minus the housing of course).

My plan is to buy the one that was mentioned above.
I'm not super mechanically inclined, but I'm not an idiot. My first car was a '66 chevy and I spent a lot of time under the hood making it run. I vowed to get a college education so I could make enough money to pay somebody to work on my cars for me. That worked well for about 10 years.
Then I bought a Jeep and want to work on it all the time even when there is nothing to do.

Good that you are having the transmission fluid changed. I would STRONGLY recommend an auxiliary transmission cooler. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself.
Here is a good write-up on installing one of the most popular B&M, auto tranny coolers for a pre-2012 JK Wrangler. 2012's and up already have a factory installed auxiliary auto transmission cooler and they do not need an additional cooler.

Fwiw if anyone is interested...I took the jeep to the dealership this morning to get the coolant lines replaced. I'm also getting the tranny fluid replaced. So I'm hoping this is the solution to the problem. I'm planning to add the additional cooler after I get paid.
This is the second issue I've had with this tranny and I'm obviously hoping it's the last.

Why or where it happened really doesn't matter. So don't let opinion get in the way of fact - that light comes on just before your tranny boils over and lights your rig on fire.
Prior to that it quitely logs a P0218 code (no indicator for that). And really if the big brains at Chrysler gave a crud about you, that would throw the light... But it doesn't.
The solution is to install an auxillary tranny cooler (I used a B&M Supercooler 70268 Transmission Cooler -- available on Amazon for like $65, and easily installed with hand tools)...
CHANGE YOUR TRANNY FLUID NOW - if you have had this message even one time you have damaged your transmission fluid and it needs to be replaced.
Then, get an transmission temperature gauge installed. You can get something basic from AutoMeter, or any other manufacturer, or you can get fancy and get an Aeroforce interceptor - which is what I did, because I didn't need to wire a sender, it just plugs into the ODB2 port.
Anyhow, all of that having been said, the really important thing you need to understand is that regardless of what caused it, that message means your transmission was a few clicks from potentially destroying your truck. Take it seriously.
The standard tranny cooler in the jeep radiator is not in the main airflow, so on hot days, with a lot of tranny slip for any reason, the temperature will build very quickly. An auxiliary tranny cooler mounted in the main airflow will help a ton, especially in your hot climate.
Once you have a gauge installed so you can monitor this stuff, any time the Transmission is over 240 degrees you should be looking to give it a rest.. Thankfully, with an aux cooler, that shouldn't happen much...

I was in O/D and was running about 2700-3000 RPM at 75-80 mph.
Checked the fluid while it was hot and idling and the fluid was above the hot holes on the dipstick. It was a little dark, but there was plenty of pink still.

I've got a leveling kit on it, bumper, sliders, wheels and slightly wider than tock tires. i was just low rolling hills of east Texas. I was thinking of the same thing on the aux cooler.
I'm praying that my Jeep won't blow up on me tomorrow as I have to make a 60 mile round trip.

Hot oil light flashing
My wife and I went out of town this morning and were headed home. (2008 JKU) We were about 60 miles from home when my check engine light went on. I decided as we were relatively close I'd make it home and take it to the shop.
A few minutes later the HOT OIL warning started flashing and dinging. (Outside temp was about 103 at this point). It then stopped after a minute or so and didn't go back on. I pulled over to the closest truck stop (45 miles from home) and checked the oil. I noticed when I popped the hood and noticed the hose from the air box to the top of the valve covers was unplugged. I reconnected it and headed home, having not seen anything out of place under the vehicle.
I stopped by Midas on the way home and had them plug in and the code said tranny malfunction. I was wondering if it was the dreaded cooling lines that need to be replaced. The Jeep isn't having any issues shifting, no unsightly drips that I have noticed when the torque converter went out, and nothing smells to be burning.
I'm also wondering if there is just a jacked up sensor. However, I am planning to get it to the Jeep dealership in the next few days to get the coolant lines replaced. They told me factory recalls get bumped to the front of the repair list.
Anybody have thoughts on possible issues? We are down to my Jeep at the moment, so we have to get transportation lined up just to get the Jeep in the shop. My had a nasty wreck a couple of weeks ago and totaled her car. We were actually on the way back from an appointment with the trauma surgeon who treated her broken ribs and bruised lung.
