Pammie Hi! I'm a newbie in the Jeep world. I have driven the typical "mom" car for the last 16 years, but have dreamed of owning a Jeep since I was 14 years old. So creature comfort was on my want list. Nav, leather seats, 4doors, premium sound, remote start for those cold mornings and of course it had to look cool! I now have 2014 Flame Red Jeep Wrangler Sahari Unlimited! I can drive around town, but can also pull my boat to the lake and have the top off. Yes I am 48 years old, kids have just left for college and its time for me and hubby to have a little fun for us! I look forward to using it off road with hubby on hunting trips, beach vacas and just enjoying the outdoors. Some of you may bash me for not being a true Jeep off roader, but at this time in our lives this model makes perfect sense. I love it!

I am sorry, Mike! I didn't think that I specified non-Rubi's in my post.
I like nothing better than to flame up the Rubi drivers that call all Sahara's mall crawlers. When they follow me, they might get their "RUBBYCON" stickers scratched!! I am the one with the "SAHARA"! But it has some goodies on it!

cornfedksboy I bought the Unlimited Moab because I use this vehicle as a daily driver Mon-Fri. On the weekends, my wife, two boys, and I take it on road trips, first on the high way (usually hundreds of miles), then on unmaintaned dirt roads, and off trail in the flint hills. We go camping, fishing, and exploring. The Moab offered leather, climate control, nav, and auto everything on the inside. On the outside it gave me steel bumpers, skid plate, and rock rails. I wanted the protection and winch ready bumper (move fallen trees and self recovery from mud) over electronic discos. The LSD and silent armor tires are also better for my use than the MTs and lockers. The color matched top and black wheels look great as a package.

Last, I make payments on this vehicle. I'm not going to take it somewhere that I'm likely to break something...not yet.

Javy871 Bought mine sight unseen. Love the luxuries. Mentioned above. Only regret I have, but didn't know at the time, was the 3.21 gear ratio... But everything is upgradeable, for a price.

FreeRange This is very interesting! I'll have to go back and re-read! I just got my 2009 Sahara on Wednesday...when you're buying used it's hard to get exactly what you want.

I did want stripped down because I don't use/like most of the comfort features...but I did want air conditioning and a hard top (I'll never drive with it open and the soft tops are useless for our climate)...so to get air...it seemed I had to move up the luxury scale! But I still have a more basic model I think...still has cloth seats for example.

R51 I wanted to build an overland vehicle where I can take my wife and kids out for days in the mountains/desert and have fun, but knowing I won't get stuck and get us killed. I figured I could either start with a Sahara and make it more capable, or start with a Rubi and make it more comfortable. I chose the former (still not sure that was the best way to go.) We just finished a 4200 mile road trip over three weeks hitting 5 national parks. Things like leather, stereo, DVD, 115V plug etc are all nice when you put in that kind of mileage and time. The 2.5" Teraflex lift, 33" tires, roof rack and rotopax helped us not get stuck and be prepared in case we did. I'm not done with all the customization yet, but I like the way it is coming together.

Lynskey has a 2 door. AC is not standard on the 2 door base Sport. It is a "pre-checked" $995 option....or you can bypass it.

I don't even have a sport "S" and I have AC and USB in the center console...AC is standard, the USB i think came with the connectivity group ($400 option i think).

GoldenSahara00 Just throwing this out there. My 8.8 rear axle is out of an early 2000s explorer. I expected the LSD to be a bit worn, when I tore it apart it looked pretty normal. Now that I have run it a while, it's amazing how well the LSD works, and the advantage it gives both on AND offroad. That's right. It made a noticeable difference when wheeling, and I had a lot of guys (including many forum members) mention the difference. LSD is certainly not over rated. I planned to replace it with a locker pretty quick but am now in no rush. And if this LSD can live 10 or so years on road and then still work great in my wrangler with heavy offroad use, I think they might last a little more than a few years.

1. If you have Sahara tires, I think you should be using those in winter unless you have your KM's siped, or are dealing with deep, unplowed snow.

2. LSD isn't "over-rated". It isn't like limited slip differentials are some unproven fad. Like any clutch, the more (and harder) you use it, the quicker it will wear. Common talk on off-road forums is how quickly Trak-Loc wears and how useless it is, but you should consider the source and use. If it is used on pavement, and for light duty trails, it will last quite awhile. If you are climibing rocks and wheeling every weekend, it is pretty tame and it will wear out much quicker. If you are going to off-road, get better LSD (Tru-Trac) or lockers. But if you are going to be on road, Trac-Lok is fine.

3. Do you mean BLD (Brake Lock Differential)? BLD is actually redundant on a Rubi because you already have lockers which are far superior. BLD is the off-road programming for traction control which applies to brakes to a faster spinning wheel in order to transfer torque to the other wheel. So if one wheel is spinning in the air, BLD kicks in and applies to brakes to that wheel until the wheel on the ground is turning at the same speed...which is great for vehicles with open diffs or tame LSD's. Or do you mean the standard traction control and ESC that all Wranglers have? Traction control also applies the breaks to a faster spinning wheel (and may even cut engine power), but anyone who has had Traction control kick on while pulling out into traffic knows how much it sucks to have your vehicle apply the brakes and cut your throttle.

4. Being able to turn your lockers on in 4HI and 2WD is usless in day to day driving. How often do you turn on your lockers or disco while driving on pavement? The answer is almost never. No one switchs into 4HI when driving down the street unless the weather is really, really bad (slick), and you would not turn your lockers on at speed because when locked, you can't really turn your steering wheel (unless on a super slick surface, but if you are locked and take a turn, you are going to FORCE some of your wheels to break what little traction they have beause they must spin at the same speed).

Your "Sport or Rubi" only stance is from your own POV based on how you would use the vehicle, and how you think others should use it. But for many, it simply does not make sense. For the "off-roading" places I go, I can basically do it in 2WD. I looked at a Sport S, but I wanted saddle leather, 115V outlet and a painted top. That meant Sahara. There was no need for me to pay even more for a Rubi because for how I would use it, I'll get far more use out of LSD and AT tires than lockers/open diff and MT tires because 99.9 percent of the time I'm on pavement where lockers and ediscos are not used. The other 0.1% of the time, I'm on trails or places that I probably don't even need 4WD, let alone lockers, ediscos, and a 4:1 transfer case. Outside of testing to make sure it worked, my vehicle has yet to be used in 4LO. My family enjoyed cruising through downtown and along Lake Shore Drive on Sunday in perfect 80 degree weather....that is how my Wrangler.

EJH2013 I got a Sahara for most of the same reasons already listed. I don't have anywhere close to rock crawl so I couldn't imagine needing the extra's a Rubicon offers but liked the options the Sahara has. All of my recent vehicles have been loaded up with climate control, leather, heated seats and mirrors etc.

Our Jeep is a weekend toy and winter vehicle for me. Itís something for me to work on and play with. What's happened for me over the last 10 months is that I find myself driving far more than my (former) DD.

We also deal with snow during the winter and we live outside of town. My excuse to get a third vehicle was for the winter months. Because of this we wanted a hard top. My wife liked the color matched fenders and hard top, and I agreed with Bright White with tinted windows would look nice.

Overall when looking for a fun "toy" to have and play with (especially for the winter) there was nothing else that even came to mind. What else can go from a hard top snowmobile with heated seats, mirrors and climate control, to a door-less convertible (we have a soft top for the summer) to cruise to the lake in the summer?


We have two daughters that are 9 and 7. They think the Jeep is the coolest thing in the world. Itís all they want to take anywhere. They think itís a treat for them to go for a ride. Making two little girls happy by taking them for a 10 minute ride can save the day!!!

I donít have a lift or 35ís, at least not for the next couple of years, so basically mine is a mall crawler, but I can do it in two feet of snow...

I kept my rubi wheels, sahara wheels with 500 miles on them were picked up for 600$, (craigs list) 2 sets now, rubi for winter and roading, sahara for highway and sand applications. LSD is over rated, I live in NW PA and we get plenty of snow. If there is enough snow to make my tires slip then I'm in 4x4 mode anyhow plus LSD clutches are worthless after a few years and are costly... Strokerswild Since my Jeeps have all been daily drivers, I wanted all the toys, leather, and painted fenders.

The rest of the rig is more than adequate for my intended use (snow, light off roading and trail), and I haven't made any major changes nor do I plan to.

BenDiem It all started for me in 1999 when I was looking to purchase my first Jeep.
I always liked the look of the Sahara editions with the two tone interior, the painted fenders and the tan top. I also always liked the stock Sahara wheels.

In late '99, I ordered my 2000 TJ Sahara, yep, with the two tone interior, the body color painted fenders and the tan top.

This is why I chose and will continue to choose (ordering '14 JK Sahara) a Sahara over a Sport or a Rubicon. I just love the look.

BTW, I wish Jeep continued to offer tan tops as a no cost option. I also wish Jeep offered the two tone dark green and tan Sahara seats. Moreover, I wish Jeep continued to offer one piece Hard Tops!

JEEPDON I bought my Sahara sight un-seen; because I thought a JEEP was primarily an off road vehicle and that was what I wanted. No, I did not do enough research.
After I bought it, I realized that I had just another SUV in JEEP's clothing!!
So, I then went to work and made an ORV out of it!!

4:1 Transfer case, D44 front (sleeved and gusseted) selectable lockers front and rear, 5.38 gears. And it is still too high geared!!
All the boys and girls with their Rubi's are welcome to follow me....but, when we get done, it might not be quite as pretty!!!

MikeK46 Mine was to be my first Jeep, my only vehicle & daily driver that I knew would stay mostly on the road. I wanted black on black 2 door with heated leathers, painted fenders, & dual-top, but didn't care about nav...and I needed it asap. There was only one like that anywhere, and it was a Sahara.

So starting with the Sahara as the base & upgrading to suit my needs worked out perfectly. Swapped in some Rubi shocks and Quick Discos, and gained 2.5" with 4 door springs. 4.10s would've been nice, but when I re-gear I'm going right to 4.56s or 4.88s anyway.

If you are going to do a lot of changing, I would consider a Sport S...or even a Rubi (depending on what you are changing).

1manWolfpack Had everything on it that I wanted at the time. 3.73's and towing, hard top, connectivity, etc. We have a separate "family cruiser" SUV, but I knew that I would have a car seat in it and my wife would also drive it some. She liked the navi and leather seats.

Furthermore, it was our favorite on the lot, and I am not sure my grand cherokee would have survived another trip home and back to the dealer without overheating, flooding the dealership lot, and needing a lot of money invested in it (trade it value that day was at a high :-)

I don't understand this. A Rubi costs more than the Sahara. Are you comparing an optionless, and somewhat neutered, Rubicon against a loaded Sahara? If so, the difference is not 8 grand for plastic and leather (which are offered on the Rubi, see it all the time). My Sahara came with Rubicon suspension and MT's, but has all the options I wanted without loading up a Sport. The best of both worlds. Maybe I'll pull you and your lockers out of the mud one of these days lol

rdg04578 That definitely puts an new perspective on things--and being an Rubicon owner --where there will never be any "Grey Poupon" to grace the interior there will be plenty of "Gray Poop on" it

I'm assuming you sold your Rubi wheels and purchased Sahara take-offs. I'm sure that netted $400 or so, but I don't think that could make up the difference when you say the same price. Just kidding. Whatever floats your boat. But lockers/axles aren't of much use if you don't have tires that deliver in the conditions you need those for. I would at least run an aggressive all terrain.
