If you are okay with Auto, Pass and offer this guy $9200 cash. hard top, Sahara, 2001, and way less miles. (ad copied and pasted at the end of my "tips).
Here are some random tips from my having owned a TJ which lived in both NorCal and SoCal.
Join as many TJ or off road forums as you can and post a WTB ad. You may get a sweet deal from a board member.
Hard tops are a must if you want a hard top. Used you can find one for around 1000 in California but why pay separate when you can incorporate the cost into your original purchase (plus it works out cheaper that way). You can always take off the hard top and put it in your garage.
Soft Top, plan on replacing yours with a sailcloth top, WAY much quieter for freeway driving, but not as quiet as hard top.
La you need AC no matter what. I don't care if it doesn't sound macho. i drove with no a/c across the dessert with just a Bimini top and no doors.. it was fun the first 3 hours then it was murderous hot hah hah hah. wish I had AC i would have put my top up and CHILLED. had to buy a throw away ice chest and fill it with ice ala swap cooler.
Stay away from 97-99 if poss. the AC has the slider switch. The rotary switch on the 2000-up is much better. Catalitic converters go bad so check for a rattle sound under the passenger door and have the seller change or walk away.
I live in NorCal so I know TJ's are way over priced in Cali but hold out and you will find what you want. If you want a hard top, wait and buy a TJ with a hard top. Def get the D44 on the Sport or Sahara. I personally had a 4 cyl (SE) and wished I would have gotten a 6 cyl. it was great at first I drove it all over the southwest but when I started getting bigger tires it became a dog. my next plan was to re-gear but then i had to add the cost of a D44 or D60 or Ford 9inch to "do it right". If i had the D44 at least i would have justified the re-gearing cost. (TJ D44's are more of a D35 D44 hybrid)
Also get the full doors ones (Sport or Sahara) you can always buy half doors or take off your doors (especially in Southland weather). Buying an SE you get the half doors which are great but in LA highways you wish you had the full doors with roll up windows for when you need them, and like I said, take them off when you don't.
Craigslist tends to be cheaper than autotrader in Cali, but do still check autotrader and car gurus. Also dealer wise, consider (if they have one you like) the Jeep dealer in Ontario as well as the OC dealers.
I prefer to buy from an owner but sometimes that means it will be a higher mileage TJ they want to part with whereas dealers will have lower mileage vehicles they bought at auction.
IF you go dealer (or private) make sure you check the history of the vehicle. the last few years saw a few vehicles from flooded areas retitled in Cali.
Don't jump on the first one you see unless it has EVERYTHING you want.. (except stuff you can change like tires rims or stereo or speakers or fog lights - though most sports and Sahara's had them)..
I am on the fence about purchasing a previously lifted TJ unless you have a lift guy that can check it out for worn or bent suspension components.
Cruise control can be added later if you want with an oem harness (LA DRIVING) but they went from around 100 dollars to crazy expensive now that they don't make them anymore, so again, if you want cruise then hold out for it.

|kcavallo||Thanks for all the replys. I checked it out in person today the guy was willing to meet me at a much lower price. No leaks on it and the shop that did the engine is suprisingly reputable and is clean outside and inside with no rust or dents. So still up in the air. I really dont know how many miles i can get out of the rest of the jeep that has 180,000 miles on it. I'm looking for a hard top and they are hard to find or fairly over priced here in OC being that my top dollar is 10000!|

Ask yourself how you envision your Jeep a couple years down the road... do you see it with big tires, lockers, etc.? If so, then make sure any TJ you buy has the optional stronger Dana 44 rear axle. The standard Dana 35c rear axle isn't strong enough for big tires and/or a locker. The Dana 44 seldom adds to the cost of a used TJ since few people would know if the TJ they're selling has a Dana 35c or the significantly stronger Dana 44 rear axle.
An easy way to tell the Dana 44 is it has a more squared off differential cover with a threaded steel bolt in the cover's lubricant fill hole. The Dana 35c's differential cover is perfectly oval-shaped with a black plastic snap-in plug in the lubricant's fill hole.

that's a 2000 sahara with plenty of issues from the pictures in the ad let alone the fact the seller discloses a rebuilt engine. the price is way out of line of you ask me.

|tjokee||Well, I would not call myself one of the experienced guys on this website when it comes to Jeeps since I just bought my first Jeep three years ago. But based on the fact I spent 3 years reading topics and post on this site by experienced Jeep owners before I bought my Jeep, I took my time and decided what year and options I wanted in a Jeep and if it had any after market accessaries, such as lift, tires, wheels and bumpers, ect. Then I compared the asking price based on all these options as well as the condition and performance of how it drives and runs. I looked for two years and found the one that fit my plan. So I say if the price is right and its in good condition and runs/drives great and meets your idea of what your looking for, do it. I test drove both the YJ and TJ models and in my opinion the performance, driving and handling was way better than the YJ. Plus the after market accessory options for TJ's is endless. Post some pictures and options the Jeep has.|

Needing advice on buying a TJ
Hello all, I just sold my YJ and am now looking for a TJ. I found this one on autotrader-
I really like the way it looks and how it sits and all the exterior mods. Its also right in my budget. My only concern is the guy said he rebuilt the engine 300 miles ago and rebuilt the rear diff. The jeep has 180,000 original miles. He's the second owner and has had it for 7 years. Also it has always been a registered CA jeep so I know there will be no rust. I've always heard its a bad idea to buy any car with a rebuilt engine but its hard to pass up one as sweet as this.
He said it has a full warranty he can transfer to me if I buy the jeep and had to rebuild it because the head gasket blew.
Well anyways I was just trying to find out if any of you experienced guys would recommend this or think its a good idea to get into.
Any advice helps!
