oh it might add a couple hundred bucks and yes it is a stronger axle better suited to severe duty.

Then remote res shocks will be your best friend. I'd say a set of Fox (not emulsion!) remote res is the best investment. The Foxes are mostly rebuildable, so you'll only buy parts which are relatively cheap. With a common monotube you'll be buying a new shock every so often because of fade (resis reduce fading). Also, I'd contact Zukizzy/Wayne on Jeepforum: he can valve them for your needs.

Khwaja Correct , this driving needs speed at times on rough terrain with lots of airborne activities ;-) , for if you loose the momentum the soft sands have no grip.

So need a very different suspension than conventional.

You're talking high-speed, smashing through the woops, and maybe even jumping, correct? That would be pushing OME to the limits.

Khwaja Budget is not a constraint , just want to spend it once and get it right. Had OME on my land cruiser and faced no issues.

OmniscientHiers Budget? Entry-level shocks such as Monroe's (rancho), Bilstein 5100s, and OME aren't up to that performance.

Khwaja By driving on sand I mean dune bashing in the desert ,currently the jeep came with rancho9000 but am not impressed with these as the jeep is already slagging from the rear.

Appreciate your opinion .

Could you describe sand driving? If you're talking about speed, it takes $$$$. If you're referring to weekend trips to the beach, OME is a great option.

Congrats on the purchase, I got the same vehicle July 2012, post up pix if you have them.

The Dana 44 axle was optional on the Sahara (and Sport), if you get your build sheet you would see this line: DRKP Dana 44/226MM Rear Axle. All Dana 44 axles in 2002 came with 3.73:1 gears from the factory. As was said above the D44 is a heavier duty axle than the standard axle. But you don't have a D44 in the front (unless the prior owner did a swap). As for value I think the D44 axle option was priced about $450 in 2002 and does add a tad to the re-sale value of any TJ.

greer9904 With the 6sp I'm going to say 4:10 gears. But maybe 4:56 my buddy has 33s and 4:56 but he has the reg 5spd and your trans has low gears in it.

Khwaja It's a manual 6 gear transmission , done 100k km (65k miles approx). For Sand driving is OME the best suspension or has anyone got better experience .?

OmniscientHiers 32s and 3.73 gears aren't bad.. 33s and up, well you may want to regear.

elite56 With that axle your definitely good to put 33" tires on it.
As for gearing, you'll definitely want to regear if you go to 33" tires. Which ratio you'll want to regear to completely depends on which transmission you have.

Khwaja Thanks , do I need to worry about regearing or can I add more chunky tires ? Was thinking about 32 or 33".

Unfortunately not many qualified / fair priced garages here in Dubai.

Khwaja New owner of 2006 TJ , trying to build it up as my second drive and for some weekend fun in the desert.

My transmission looks like the pic , appreciate your help in identifying it and any suggestions on mods for desert driving , currently have 31x10.5x15 , k&n intake , banks exhaust .

Congrats on the jeep. The front D44 is generally found on Rubicon models and is considered to be a heavier duty axle. Benefit of a D44 would be when it comes to gearing. It is possible the previous owner might have swapped a front able from a Rubicon.

03 sahara jeeper If it is a sahara model it should have a Dana 30 front axle. The Dana 44 came on the Rubicon. The Dana 30 front axle has a steel fill plug.
