Still need help!!!

The starting issue ended up being a loose connection. I didn't have a wire harness all the way plugged in.

With the speedometer-

I have taken it all apart again..

Made sure all connections were good.

Plugged it into the connector with the needle exposed.

I started driving- It went straight to 30mph..

I tried to force the needle passed 30mph by lightly pushing it forward.. But when I let it go.. It bounced RIGHT back to 30mph.

So I tried to push it below 30mph- it bounced right back up to 30mph

I tried to pull the needle off and re apply it when engine was on and at a stand still.. Then I put it in gear and started moving and it went right to 30mph.

I tried to disconnect the battery- Reconnected and started driving- Went right to 30mph

I tried to spin the needle completely around to the right- then to the left- and still it went right to 30mph no matter what I did.

Once again- the odometer works fine- the tach works fine- the engine runs well. The jeep knows how fast it is going but for some reason won't let me know..

This is a 1994 4.0 Jeep YJ- The speedometer from what I read is all electric. (no cable)

I checked all the grounds I could see and all are snug- No corroded wires- No loose connections!

WTF!!!!!!??????!!!!!??????!!!!!????

Please don't reply with guesses.. If you have seen this issue or have had this issue before and have FIXED IT. PLEASE HELP!

bajajohn Since the new anti tampering laws went into place some speedometers will not operate at all or incorrectly if you take it apart. If you take it apart again clean it with alcohol and put a dry lube like Graphite on it.

Speedo

So tell us where your Speedo cable connects?

I.E the transfer case? Is it an electrical style? Is it four wire or three wire.

If it is the mechanical style that Harley is referencing in his so Eloquent way! LOL
Then disconnect at the Transfer case and put the inner cable on a cordless drill and see how fast it gets to. Should do at least 30mph on a 12v or higher cordless drill that tells you the cable is fine and gauge is functioning correctly.

Since you stated that you have to Hulk the vehicle to get it to crank tells me you have a short so go back to the speedo you took apart and look closely at the wires and see if you have it shorting out against the case.

Lastly did the no crank issue start same time speedo went out? If so the two are likely connected.

You can try a volt meter as well just not sure what it should read. But you could check for a short using the Ohms.

ddtt225 The only reason I pointed that out was because with my volt gauge I moved the needle with the ignition on. It's almost back to where it needs to be sitting after I clean the contact points on the board im hoping this will solve it. I'd start with the basics on it and try that...

Man,your guess is probably better than mine on any of this newer stuff.I am accustomed to the old speedos that have a cable connected to a gear in the tranny.I know carbs,points and simple electronic ignitions.I do my best to stay away from computers and all their sensors when it comes to autos.I grew up in a time where you could troubleshoot a problem sitting on the side of the road in just a few minutes.I am doing my best to go back to that on all my vehicles...that is all except my wifes king ranch f150 which she loves

ddtt225 you may without even noticing that you did it, have adjusted the needle itself. although they are stepper motors, those are self adjusting. what i would do is turn the key on, with the cover off the gauge and push the needle back down to 0. this MAY OR MAY NOT work but you could give it a shot, just mark the area the needle was orginally in so that way you can adjust it back if it doesnt solve it. hope this helps. HarleyDragon, does this sound like it could possibly be what he did?

harleydragon starting issue might be the switch needs adjusting..not the part that the key goes in but the actual start switch which is down the steering column...I know nothing about the speedo

Ok, so for the past week I've been researching this topic.. There is a ton of people with this problem, however, seems once they fix it they never post again!

I recently bought a 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ (5 speed w/ 6cyl)- everything was working fine.. I removed the dash to install new speakers and CD Player.. (pain in the a$$) While everything was apart I cleaned it up.. Including taking apart the speedometer and cleaning.. I put everything back, plug in all wires, and start her up..

All radio installs worked perfectly, but for some reason my speedometer will start at 0mph and as soon as I put it in first gear and go it will jump straight to 25-30mph and stay there the entire time until I come to a stop..

Odometer works perfect, tach works perfect, all other gauges work perfect.. I've checked all wires, grounds, back motherboard seems to be in good shape.. I've taken the speedometer apart and cleaned tried moving needle several different ways.. Still 25-30mph?? I find it hard to believe anything was broken during my cleaning.. Im thinking its a ground or something.. But if you have had this problem & have fixed it PLEASE tell me what you did that worked.. There is a lot of try this try that.. But NOBODY says if any of it worked..

Side Note: Now my Jeep randomly doesn't start.. (No crank, but lights and gauges work bright, so I know it's not the battery/alternator.. I give it a little shake and by a little I mean I go Incredible Hulk and practically push the jeep over and it starts right up!
