jokerchief462 210 is normal and it shouldn't be much more than a needle width either direction.

Did the white smoke dissapate??

Did some air bubbles come out and can you see the water flowing???

So I found some time to work on the car. I did what you said, burped it for about 8 minutes but it started smoking more towards the back of the exhaust manifold, white smoke, and the car was burping as well. At this point the temp. gauge spiked to 210. I don't want the car to overheat and break something else, or blow something in the engine. Should I continue running it at that point? I grabbed the hose and started spraying the radiator, but how long should I let the car run at these high temps to burp it?

jokerchief462 Burp the air and make sure you have water flowing.

Your white smoke did it last long or disapate with time. Could have dirty hand prints.

Watch the temp gauge keep a hose handy and if you get a unexpected overheat check flow in the radiator. Only use the hose to fill and spray the front of the radiator no where else.

TheGreenMachine3 Thanks for the replies guys. So I'm going to run it again today. And old buddy of mine said to let it run for about 20 - 30 mins. I'll try to get some pictures in. Also, leaving the radiator cap open to see if there is any splashing- I'll do this too, but what is the significance?

peety Did the amount of white smoke deminish after you had the engine running for a bit ??
The cast iron exhaust manifild is porous and will hold oil and coolant for a considerable time. If it did not, check the intake gasket for leaks, if you didn't get all of the clag off the mating surfaces, it will leak.

ddtt225 I'd go with what Saharagreen says. It does sound like the gasket might be pinched and is allowing coolant to seep.

89Saharagreen Ok so you can pull the radiator cap and crank her up if you made a mistake with the headgasket or if the gasket got damaged while you installed it will blow coolant out pretty quickly. That way you know pretty quickly if the head gasket is still the issue.

However a little white smoke is to be expected after this install even if done correctly.

Lastly monitor your temp gauge it will overheat fast if the issue is still the head gasket.

Also did you take pictures of this work so you can share with the rest of the forum?

Guaranteed someone somewhere is thinking about this right now on the forum so share your experience.

Hey guys,

New to the forums here. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who post here because I would not have come this far without you guys.

My baby: 1995 2.5l Rio Grande

So, I just recently replaced my head gasket and I followed the protocols of the Haynes manual, along with some help of one of my friends- P.S. this was my first experience repairing my jeep and the learning curve was steep for me.

I had a blown head gasket. I replaced the head gasket, got the head machined- no cracks/warps, and I've changed the oil, and coolant.

THE PROBLEM(?): Turned on the car today for the first time since I replaced everything. Sounds perfect, started perfect, but I'm getting white smoke from around the exhaust manifold, I'm assuming its around the head pipe or something, but its not much smoke at all. It doesn't smell like oil, but I can't tell. I'm aware this could be coolant in the exhaust and I just need the car to run, but I shut the car off after 5 minutes because the smoke was concerning me. What should I do?
