jokerchief462 I was at a pick and pull yesterday and there was 11 explorers with a disc brake 8.8 still available here in Vegas.

I picked a MPFI setup from a Cherokee for the YJ. Just need a 95 harness and computer. Working a deal on a part out for that

Phil1 Good info.

In my case the whole rear was shot. The pinion had missing tooth, many (6 or 7) teeth on ohe ring dear were broken, the all spider gears were pitted and the profile of the teeth had worn into a new shape, the carrier holes for the spider gear pin was elongated. Nothing to salvage.

Cowboy17 For future reference, the spiders from 3.07, 3.73 and 4.10 are all the same. As long as the ring and carrier are not damaged, the spiders are and easy swap.

Phil1 Just as a follow up and for the record I ended up locating and purchasing hey Dana 35 rear axle assembly with perfect teeth and very little play . Even the spider gears were tight. It came with the Dana 30 front axle assembly. Also in vg shape. paid 450. Since my yj is a 92 and the axles were from a 95 the yoke accepted a bigger u joint. Took 1 day and 28 more $. But now withnew engine mounts, new trans, good xfer case and a dif with very good orthodontics I have a running Wrangler.

Continuing thanks to all those who gave me insight.

Phil1 I see that East Coast Gear Supply shows a ford 8.8 that bolts in. $610 plus shipping. I think that is my next move.

A couple teeth fell from the rear diff? If so spend the money on an axle swap. The stock D35 is know for blowing spider gears under load from bigger tires. Just my 2 cents.

okay I put it up on jack stands. Now I know where my next paycheck is going. A couple of teeth just fell out. JB weld isn't gonna fix this.

c5wagner I had a banging problem until I rebuilt my 4.2l, I guess it was a bearing in the engine.....

harleydragon u joints would be the first thing I would check but yes it could be the things you mentioned

the banging gets faster the faster I go

My new 1992 YJ was grinding gears and had a loud banging that got faster the faster I went. A new transmissions solved the grinding and popping out of gear. But the banging still occurs under load. Letting off the gas or coasting results in no banging. Maybe the xfer case? Could it be the rear? It has become my favorite money pit. Advice is needed!
