I learned early on when looking for parts for older vehicles. Look for the old guy in the parts store. If the part you are looking for doesn't have a computer reference it doesn't exist in the mind of the young guys and they will blow you off..
Jeep in the early years bought surplus parts and it was very likely the same year and model had different running gear.
One of the side benefits of that era you can do motor and drive train swaps with over the counter parts if you do the research.
one example was on a 55 Willis pickup I restored using the Willis parts # a u joint was priced 44dls. same u joint using the Chevrolet parts # was 6dls.
the Willis had a 226 cubic inch engine in it that was Made by continental engine. after I spent hours and mucho dls. rebuilding it we went to Hot August Nights in Reno. A buddy of mine that owned a forklift co. in Stockton was admiring it and when he looked at the Engine and commented Heck I have a couple of brand new ones like that in the shop I about had the big one.

|JoeRomley||Thanks to an old man that was hanging out at Napa, I fixed it. I took the old nipple to four different stores today. When I got to Napa, two guys were looking through all the books and couldn't find the part. The old guy looked at it and told them to look up a filter conversion kit for an old Ford. I guess the old cars oil filters were different and had a bolt going through them. The conversion kit changes that out to a regular oil filter. The part that replaced the bolt in the old filter was an SAE threaded 3/4X16 nipple that fit perfectly. So, if you ever run in to this problem, try looking for that kit. It cost me $5.49. Less than ordering the OEM part from Chrysler and having to wait a week. My YJ is back on the road and I'm a happy camper.|

|JoeRomley||i don't want to risk damaging the threads on the adapter screwing it in. I'm going to take it down to Star Auto Parts today. They have a really good machinist who said he might be able to make me one if they can't find a replacement.|

|87 Florida YJ||Probably a stupid comment but is there any change by reversing the adapter into the block those threads would catch, rethread themselves and the filter could screw into the pristine side?|

|JoeRomley||Thanks Cyndi. This is the part I need to replace. Looks like a simple enough nipple that should be somewhere in town. The torn up threads are from me taking it out with a pair of vice grips. The tops of the threads on the filter side are a bit flattened out. I think that was what caused the filter to blow off.|

|JoeRomley||If I could find the part I'd pay a lot more than $10. Called three dealers and they all said they would have to order it from Detroit. I don't care how much it costs to fix it, I just want it back on the road and running right. I unscrewed the adapter. Just a two inch threaded pipe. I'm going to go to every auto parts store I can tomorrow to find one.|

|JoeRomley||Im using an stp s3985 also. It the same part number I replaced. The secind new ine I put on came off as well. If I cant find an oem replacement would a filter relication kit work? Pep boys has one for $50. My oil pressure was at 45. I think when the first one came off it might have rounded the tops of the threads enough to keep the new filter secure. When I tighten it down by hand it pips and is loose again.|

Need help finding a part
I have an 88 yj 4cyl 2.5. The oil filter popped off and now when I screw on a new filter (by hand only) it pops off one the pressure builds up. The threaded nipple the filter screws on to I think is called an oil filter adapter. I cant find a replacement anywhere. Anyone have a good parts source? I'm in southern California. Is there any other option besides replacing the part?
