I love how almost every thread turns into a "you should have a Rubi" thread. LOL
This thing went on for a page and a half with multiple mentions of larger tires and the fact that the 3.21 is garbage for larger tires. It was mentioned several times that the Rubi was $1500-$2000 more and that you can get bigger tires with it... yet not one mention that for an extra $50 and upgrading from the Tow Package to the MAX Tow package you get 3.73 gears and can pretty much run up to 35s without a whole lot of trouble.
I love my Sahara. Only downside to it is the 3.21s. however... Since I am getting 20 MPG during my commute... I am okay with the 3.21 gears for right now. =) Sure as heck beats to 16-17 MPG I get on my SRT8.
And honestly... This is as bad as the Challenger and Charger boards. When I had a Charger R/T everyone would always be all "you need to get the SRT8 or you are wasting your money." Um... no. They make different models for a reason. Not EVERYONE is going to go rock crawling. Not everyone needs/wants MT tires. I know guys that own Rubis that have NEVER put it in 4LO or locked the diffs. So why spend an extra $2000 over an extra $50? just don't make sense to me.
Btw... I own an SRT8 Challenger and the only Challenger owners I give grief to are the ones that buy the six cylinder ones. =) And even then.. whatever floats your boat... it's just the knuckleheads that buy the 6 and then plaster SRT stickers all over them that need to be pitied and mocked.
Congrats on the Sport, Voodoo. I'm sure you'll love it. I know mine has been fun.

The first and LAST time I bought a 2 wheel drive pickup we got 105 inches of snow the next winter. That pickup sat for 3 weeks at a time. I sold it to my dad the next summer and ordered a new 4 wheel drive pickup (still own that one). That's the LAST time I bought 1/2 of a vehicle. My 2014 Rubi Unlimited arrived 3 weeks ago. Picked it up on a Saturday and dropped it into 4 lo the next Saturday to climb a mountain trail. That extra low transfer case is priceless. Lockers and the swaybar disconnect aren't as valuable to me YET. But winter is only around the corner. And this time I'm ready.
Glad you like your Sahara's. Everybody has a favorite tool for the job. I just won't buy half a Jeep anymore than I will ever buy half a pickup again.

I did plast-dip my Ram wheels. It looked really nice for awhile, but then the break dust on the front would stick to them easily, and really didn't wanna wash off. Anybody else have this issue? Or do you put that gloss finish over them?

Yes, you can powder coat them, but a cheaper solution is plasti-dip.

but if you really don't plan on going serious off roading any of the wranglers can and will do quite well considering they're all 4WD.
I'd love to get a rubicon when i order next month, but in all reality a sport would be better for myself considering i WON'T be doing as much off roading as others claim they do. my jeeping will basically consist of bar hopping, heading down to the beach topless and doorless, and the occasional road trips here and there.

|HardCase||VooDoo, the white Sahara sounds like a pretty good deal to me, at the price you negotiated. Given your use, it sounds like the Sahara would suit your needs better than a Rubi. I am not sure about the painting of the fenders, it'd probably work fine. I did Premium LineX on a grill guard on my Tundra a few months back, the guard was only two years old but already displayed a lot of rust, so I had it sandblasted and Line-Xd, and it looks great. I'll be curious to see how it holds up over the next couple of winters.|

One more thing. Eventually I'd wanna get different wheels, but in the meantime I'd like to make these black. Is powder-coating an option with these wheels? Or is it better just to get them painted? (don't feel like plast-dipping these...did that on my last Ram.
I read the heat from the powder-coating could make the wheels weaker. Not sure if that's legit or not.

After a loooong day, and a lot of driving around/looking at numerous Jeeps, I think I finally found what I want.
Not this exact Jeep, but looks just like this.
Saw so many that I liked, but I just couldn't find 'The One'. One would have the tow package, but wouldn't have the 3.73 axle ratio. One would have one thing, but not the other. And so on.
So at the end of the day, I found a 2014 Sahara Unlimited. Sticker on it is $39,730. Got them down to $35,570.
It's white with the matching top and fenders. I really think I may paint the fenders black. What's the best way of going about this? Regular paint-job...line-x?? Also has the black/saddle (brown) interior, which I really like.
Some of the options:

-Leather heated seats
-Connectivity group w/ Bluetooth
-Tire pressure monitoring display
-Max tow package
-Class ll 4" receiver hitch

I don't plan on going to 33's. I'm happy with the stock wheels and tires. Actually the OEM tires on the Sahara are part of the reason as to why I picked that particular model. And if I did go to 33's, it won't be until my current tires are dead, (and I average about 7000 miles a year).....so there is a chance that I might not even see a 2nd set of tires on this vehicle if a trade it in after 5 years.
You said that outside of tires, a Rubi is just like a Sahara when not off-roading. That is almost true (my Sahara has LSD, another reason why I went Sahara over Rubi)....but let's turn it around.
A Sahara is just like a Rubi when not off-roading, and I don't do much off-roading...so why should I pay extra for a Rubi?
Assuming the vehicles are stock, in 2WD, the Rubi provides no advantage over the Sahara. In 4HI, unless you have a wheel coming off the ground (ediscos), the Rubi still does not provide an advantage over the Sahara. When you throw in LSD (only available on the Sport and Sahara), in 2WD, and in 4HI (on slick surfaces....which is my concern), the Sahara actually has the advantage over the Rubi.
The Rubi is the undisputed king in 4LO, but outside of throwing it in 4LO to make sure it worked, I have yet to use 4LO in my Wrangler. I used 4LO twice in my Libby in the +4 1/2 years I had it. One of those times was because I was towing a trailer across a private field, and I didn't want to tear up the grass...the other time was because I was just farting around on dirt/mud path. I didn't need it, I just wanted to try it out. So for me, a lot of the benefits of the Rubi simply don't apply to me.
In your situation, a Rubi makes sense. But your statement about people looking at a Sahara should get a Rubi is not accurate....because in my situation, there is nothing in my usage that says...."get a Rubi".

33" duratracs aren't much different in size than a stock rubi's size. A sahara's gear ratio is 3.21 vs. a rubi's 4.1 so can't really say they're just alike if you're considering larger tires.

|NFRs2000NYC||Even if you just want to throw on some 33" duratracs, the rubi is worth it, plus great for the winters. I live in NYC, which is the worst place in the North American continent for offroading. However, I still take my rig all around the nation to enjoy the jeep, something I never dreamed I'd do. A rubi is just like a Sahara when not offroading (except the tires). But IF you ever decide you want to drive out to Moab, you're ready. For $2000 or so it's a no brainer to me.|

|2resa||The OP is from southern WI/northern IL. That's pretty flat terrain. Being able to disconnect the sway bars with a push of a button - convenient but necessary if there's nothing off camber? Locking the diff's with a push of a button - convenient but necessary if you're just driving a dirt road to the deer stands? The gearing on a rubi would be better for larger tires but if it's your DD will you be more concerned with mpg's or looks? After all that, I'd either go Sport and save the $ for mods or go ahead and get the Rubi.|

The great thing about Jeep, wranglers most specifically, is that they are so universal- there's a model for everyone (or a few good starting points depending on need). The choice is up to the driver. Needs change over time and what works now may not. And that's the beauty about parts: they can be changed just as quickly as needs change.
And what good is neutral statements like that without my opinion: Get a Rubicon. Even if you don't use the parts right now, when the jeep eventually dies someone else will and they will thank you for it. Its an investment in the future of jeepers to come My kids and grand kids will wheel my 10a some day (my oldest is 6). Won't anyone think of the children!?

I agree with NRFs AND Panther. I bought a Jeep JK Sport with nothing on it. Planned to do desert and dirt off-roading. Simple lift with good shocks was my plan. Now I rock crawl. Oops. We've added (ourselves) a locker, changed gears, added a Rubi-E disco, and I'd kill for the crawl ratio. If I had to pay for install I'd be way upside down vs a Rubi. As it is I have better parts, the ones I want, and I am ok- but not the case for most people that would have to pay labor.
What you should buy really depends on how you use it- like Panther said. My best suggestion is find a local Jeep club. Pay someone if you have to (LOL) - but go along with someone on a few trails. If you're bored to death- buy a Sahara or a Sport. But if you get a big grin on your face off-roading go for the Rubicon since the price isn't that different from a Sahara. But be realistic with yourself like Jeepbugs.
(And like others said- don't worry too much about all the posts. Many people wind up on a forum BECAUSE they're having problems. Thousands of happy stock Jeep owners out there that aren't obsessively online like those of us with the mod-disease. Once you start you can't stop- and we often create our own problems LOL).

Every car that I've bought for my wife, myself or my kid since the arrival of these type of blogs, have had complaints about quality etc. Knock on wood, I've yet to have any problems, including my 2013 Sahara.
I love the Sahara. It's my DD and I have no intention of taking it off road. One, I don't want to scratch up something I paid a lot of money for and 2, if something happened off road, I'd be up a creek without a paddle as I can't even change my own oil (I played sports my whole life and never had a car until I was 21 - so I never even saw under a hood until then). So if you intend to use it like me and you like the color matched fenders and the silver piece on the bumpers, I'd highly recommend the Sahara. I also recommend getting the premium top as it is real nice

But it all depends on how one will use the vehicle.
The Rubi was scratched out early on my list because I knew I would not be doing much off-roading or modding.
I'd be on pavement 99.9% of the time, and light (and dry) dirt/gravel/grass trails the 0.1% of the time. I'll spend far more time driving on slick roads in winter and in the rain, than climbing over rocks.
Under those conditions (which is probably closer to reality for most JK's...as forums tend to be off-road biased), AT tires and a limited slip differential are simply better suited for the job than MT tires and open diff/lockers.
A Rubicon with the exact same options as my Sahara (with the Sahara having LSD while the Rubi has 3.73's and painted fenders) cost about $2500 more (MSRP). As nice as the Rubi is, I could not justify spending more money on features I would not use, while at the same time giving up features that would be better suited for my use.
Again, it all depends on how you are going to use the vehicle. The problem is that most of us can't see the future. You caught the off-road bug, so buying a Sahara ended up being a bad choice for you. I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. Outside of an $80 light bar (with no lights) I'm basically stock...and that is pretty much how I plan to stay....so a Sahara makes perfect sense for me.
Plus, it isn't like a Sahara (or Sport) is some type of front wheel drive 4 banger SUV.
