1987Wrangler YJ I usually just fill it until it drips out of the hole. never had any problems and I tow a sand rail

JRW7072009 My experience with most axles is that it needs to be filled up enough to get oil to the pinion, if your vent tube is place right and working it shouldn't blow the seals. On my D44 in my old XJ I had to relocate the vent tube to the top of the housing because oil was flowing out of the vent tube.


I was taught to fill it up so it the oil level is touching the bottom of the pinion bearing. Most aftermarket diff covers will have the fill plug up higher to allow extra oil.


With that said like mentioned above an axle seal is less work and money then a pinion bearing getting fried.

Oh and IMHO it's always better to have a little too much oil than not enough. I'd rather replace a blown seal (chances are it would vent out the tune anyways) than have to rebuild a diff due to lack of oil.

Manufacture says within a 1/2" of the bottom of the fill hole. So barely draining out or no more than a half inch below the whole. You can use the short end of an Allen wrench as a dipstick. And the within a 1/2" only applies if the pinion isn't clocked upwards. You need to get oil to that pinion bearing so you need to pump some extra in there if you have it clocked.

I was thinking this would be the most accurate per each particular setup, but then I keep thinking it might lead to an over-serviced diff. And overfilling is just as bad as under filling lol. I guess I'll go somewhere between the manufacturers recommendation and the fill-port method. It should be somewhere around 3.5qts I guess... Thanks for all the answers guys, really appreciate it.

This, a Gallon is only 4 quarts.

Doch80 Depends on pinion angle and what cover you have on it. I used the drain method. Just fill it till it starts draining out the fill hole. I think I put dam near a gallon in mine.

YJ fanatic The real capacity is 3 quarts. I just had my seals changed by a Ford guy, and thats what he said. But due to the pinion angle, mine was 3.5 quarts.

Just wondering, how did you know it wasn't enough? Were you going by the 3/8" fill-plug as an overflow method? Or just thought more would be better?

wasomma well having too much oil in it isn't going to really hurt anything, obviously though you want the proper amount. Generally I just fill my sump to the fill plug and once it stops draining out I seal it up. I don't have an 8.8 though.

95YamJam At first I put in 3 quarts. It was not enough. Put in 3 more and it filled it. I was a bit worried about blowing seals and it coming out the vent. I have about 5k miles on it now with no issues. I drive it every day.
