Advice on buying wrangler from Wisconsin

I do not currently own a wrangler but am very interested in doing so. I am looking to spend 3-5thousand for a base rig. I then would like to lift it and throw some other items on it that you might suggest. I would like to know if there are any particular models or years that I should avoid as well as engine type(4 or 6). I do not plan on doing any super-heavyduty over-roading. I will need to be able to pull a 2500# boat 1-2 hours at a time. Please help
