JoeBot13 BTW... I looked up that huge black fly that was flying around the campground biting people. It's a tachinid fly and it lays its eggs inside of caterpillars and the larva eats its way out.

JoeBot13 I just want to thank everyone that showed up today, your support was amazing! I'm very humbled by all of your generosity. If anyone needs tax receipts for their donations, please PM me. I'll be meeting with the PTA president within the next day or so and she can fill one out for you.

I'm feverishly going through pictures and I will have some posted up shortly.

Also, I'm going to host another run on the 15th for those that couldn't make it out this weekend. This time I'll be heading out to the Rainbow Basin and Black Canyon wilderness area. The highlight will be the petroglyphs at Inscription Canyon, but there will be a couple more dry lake beds! Hope you guys can make it out again!!

Gunner JoeBot, buddy this was a total off the hook blast. Saw wild animals, forded rivers. People got flooded in the middle of the desert. Mud bath on my new jeep. Scenery was off the hook, and Freight trains so close you could touch them as they rolled past. And the Lakebed was just the icing on the cake. One of the best runs I have been on.

JoeBot13 Hey Mudd,

Afton Canyon is a 6 mile long canyon, there are two trails that lead through the canyon.

One is officially part of the Mojave Road and it follows the Mojave River bed, and is mostly deep soft sand which could cause some trouble even for 4WD. This is especially true if the recent rains caused floods, then the river bed is going to prove more difficult.

Parallel to the river bed are the railroad tracks, which has a grated dirt road for the railroad and is more than suitable for 2WD. It goes the same places and has the same sights as the river bed. But to even get to that road there are two water crossings that you will have to go through. Last time I was there it was the dry season and they still had about 18" of water and lots of mud. This could be much higher depending on what the rains did. Good clearance and good tires are crucial, a regular car would not make it past the campground.

How many people were you going to bring with you? We may be able to open up some seats so you could still come along!

AllMudd I would love to attend this meet since Lewis Elementary is also in my community. But before I say im going to attend I have a ?. How bad will the trails be? I currently only have 2wd and won't have 4wd but will I still be able to attend?

JoeBot13 Run Update:

At this point we will have 5 or 6 Jeeps out there with us, gonna be a good day! I'm going to grab breakfast at Peggy Sue's in the morning, so I may be inside when everyone gets there. If you don't remember my rig, it's a black 2-door JK with OD green "rat patrol" stickers.

Weather wise we are looking pretty good. Sunny, Mid to High 90s with a 10-20% chance of storms in the afternoon.

I'll see everyone in the morning!

JoeBot13 School update:

The state didn't approve the temporary buildings, so now the kids are out of school another week until they can ship in some state approved portables. The classrooms that were hit the hardest were the kindergarten classes which had ankle deep mud throughout all of them. The inspectors were worried about mold, so even things that weren't on the floor ended up in the trash.

Furthermore, I'm going to have to do some damage assessment myself. Power just came back on and I have to see what it's going to cost to replace my perishables, again. I may have to postpone this run, I'll let you know later tonight so I don't ruin anybody's weekend waiting on me.

rvrabe Count me in, i'm there!

School Update

The district and our leadership were able to find some space (see picture) for our kids to continue school while theirs gets gutted and fixed. The original 6 to 8 weeks estimated for repairs just doubled.

In the meantime our kids will be going to class in open bay barracks and will get recess and PE time in one of the post gyms a couple blocks away. As you can see from the picture, the teachers don't have much to work with, most of them lost their entire classroom. This is what we are helping with...

08-29-2013 12:36 AM
JoeBot13 Sounds awesome I hope that everyone can make it!

I'm going to try to work in some of the weird and wonderful sights out there including the Mojave megaphone

Flood Relief Fundraiser Run #1 – Afton Canyon – 9/2

The Cause – Lewis Elementary Disaster Relief
On August 25th, the worst flash floods in 31 years, created by Tropical Storm Ivo’s monsoon rains washed through my community and caused an enormous amount of damage to one of our schools, Lewis Elementary School. So much damage in fact, that the District Superintendant said it looked like a warzone when he toured the aftermath and has closed it indefinitely for repairs.

Most of the structural and equipment damage will be covered by the school’s insurance; however, the majority of the school supplies came out of the pockets of the teachers and the parents. These things will not be covered by insurance, and the school will need some help to provide supplies for the students while they are displaced as well as when they are allowed back into their classes.

The Run
Monday, September 2nd
8AM - Meet up at Peggy Sue’s, off of Ghost Town Rd in Yermo.
9AM - Depart for Afton Canyon and the western portions of the Mojave Road.
3PM - Heat of the Day; begin heading back

CB Channel 24

This storm left our community muddy and wet, so I want to go out and play in the mud. This is a scenic fun trip designed with everyone in mind; a stock Jeep, novice driver, and family friendly (and encouraged) run through the western portion of the Mojave Road. We will mainly be driving in soft sand and encounter a couple muddy water crossings. Very scenic and will be worth it for even the experienced Jeepers. I picked this day in case there was a group that wanted to come a day early and run Calico. There will be another family friendly fun run on September 15th if you can’t make this one!

Family Friendly = NO ALCOHOL
Serviceable Full Size Spare
First Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher
Lots of water
Full tank of gas

It will be around 100 degrees at the heat of the day so plan accordingly. I’ll monitor the weather closely, if there are T-Storms that day I’ll have to make a last minute change to keep us out of the flood zones.

How to Help
Donate at the run; I will take cash or check and drop it off with the school’s PTA president. Make checks payable to “Lewis Elementary PTA” with “Lewis Elementary Disaster Relief” in the memo. DO NOT PUT THE WORD “FUND” ANYWHERE on the check, I was told this has to do with banking and legal issues. If you supply me with a self-addressed stamped envelope with your donation, the PTA will send you a receipt for tax purposes.

Can’t make the run, but still want to donate? PM me!

One more thing you can do is vote for Lewis Elementary during Target’s “Give with Target” promotion. Every vote for the school Target will donate $1 in supplies, up to $10,000. Here is a direct link to the school’s entry:
