jp'rs_peep'rs I figured I would revisit this thread as I'm still addressing this loud (now) popping/clunk sound. Lol! I'm not obsessed or anything...

It now does it shifting from 1st to 2nd...and as always when 1st to reverse or visa-versa.

donpstew Ok, I know I needed a new rear joint, just put a new one in and the sound is still there...although I believe that its coming from the transfer case area...any more ideas?

SurfNaked2010 it was my u-joint! just changed it took about 20min for me and never done one before. no more clanking and shifting into Reverse wahoo!!!

Pls keep me in the loop.... This noise is driving me Ape hSit!

I'm starting to lean toward possible joint as when back'n in the driveway and adjusting wheels you can hear it snap/pop multiple times.

I'm hoping to look into it this week end.

jtalar I have a similar sound, mine is really loud though and only seems to happen when backing down my driveway or in reverse on flat ground when i hit the brakes hard, I'm thinking it's the front driveshaft i'm about ready to hang underneath my rig while a buddy backs it down my driveway to pin point it, it is driving me nuckin futs. Let us know what you find, I'll do the same

350chevrolet from what your describing my first thought would be front sway bar end links. there cheap and simple so i would just replace them.

my second thought would be front drive shaft u-joints. again, cheap and simple, replace them. see if either of those help.

Drivetrain (snap/pop) noise!

Stats: "06 Wrangler TJ fully loaded Approx. 29K miles" '4.0l, 6sp 370x, 235 75-15 tires)

This issue originated way back in late summer of '08.
It started out as a slight tink'n sound, as if you grabbed a coke can and pulled the tab at the top and it slipped from your finger and made that metal on metal tink'n sound.
At that time it was accompanied by a squeaky kinda like rubber bushing sound.

The dealer where the jeep was purchased was contacted and "Silver" was taken in.
Many, many, many visit's later and multiple dealerships (headaches, cuss'n) the sound is still there! Lol!

What has already been done to try to rectify this issue:
Clutch, flywheel, all asse. parts replaced....
Rear drive shaft and joints in rear end....
Completely new 3rd member, ring/pin, axle housing, bearings.....
Slip lubed and checked......
Rear brakes and all ass. parts inspected multiple times.....
Rear linx replaced.....
Fluid replaced in Trans, rear end.....

"Silver" has been gone over with a fine tooth comb and the dealership has had numerous tech's look at her. The GM has been involved and he too has gone over the jeep with his subordinates. In fact he is a vet' mechanic and has gone over the jeep himself. They always work on just the rear....never the front. They've had the entire jeep apart from the drives position back.

Friday I took "Silver" to an independent facility and had them look, listen and they feel the sound is coming from the front and not the rear. They believe it may be the front drive shaft (U-joints)....In all likely hood this might be, or may be not. The front joints behind the wheels would be there next guess. The facility I went to specializes in suspension.

So, after all this....what I'm asking for help with is a way in which to continue the tracing / tracking down of what this pop, snap, chatter, clunk noise could be. Yes after this much time the noise is there and growing louder and is happening when tourq is applied to the drive train either going 4wd or reverse. It happens when going in and out of of camber driveway entrances, drive thru's, or when backing up into parent driveway or at home pulling into garage. The clutch will be fully engaged and it will happen.
I'm coming here to ask for some help from the many knowledgeable folks here.

What could this be?
