Mrmikeypoo for ANYBODY putting in a brake control. use a proportional controller. there are two types of controller on the market 1. proportional 2. timer ( there is a hybrid version that mixes the two but it is crap also) both major trailer axle manufacturers ( Dexter and Alco) recommend a proportional controller. They are a few extra bucks but are the best way to go. they work on momentum instead of time. its kinda a long explination but if anybody really wants to know just ask.

Twister65 06 rubicon unlimited with 35s and an automatic has no probs towing my 20 year old tent trailer all over the Nevada wilderness.

Fully loaded, my Taos is perhaps 1800-1900 lbs. which is just under the TJ's 2000 lb. safe tow limit. I would not even consider towing anything as heavy as 3500 lbs. While the TJ has the power to do so, it doesn't have even close to the minimum wheelbase length required to tow anything that heavy safely. You'd quickly learn where the term "the tail wagging the dog" came from if you got into an energency maneuver towing a 3500 lb. trailer behind your TJ.

Only the LJ Unlimited Wrangler (same engine/brakes/etc.) with its longer wheelbase is rated by the factory to safely tow 3500 lbs.

nightclub27 how far past the 2,000 lb limit? i saw one trailer that was like 3,500 lbs. How heavy is you Taos pop-up?

Jerry Bransford Any modern tent trailer of that size should have electric trailer brakes as standard. Even my small Fleetwood Taos pop-up tent trailer came standard with electric brakes that are highly effective. You only need to install an electric brake controller onto your TJ and run a brake control wire back to the 7-pin electrical connector.

I tow my Taos pop-up tent trailer all over the place with my 35" tires and 5.5" of total lift without issue, you shouldn't have any problem either. Just don't load too much weight into the pop-up (not that they have that much room) as it'll be easy to push it well over the TJ's max safe 2,000 lb. tow limit.

Ironman Do like I did. I did a disc brake swap in the rear when I had my 60 built. My rig will lock up all 4 tires now if I push hard enough and I'm rolling on 37's also. I pull a trailer full of Oak three or four times a year and I just take my time. I never had any problems. Mines a manual also.

Rawkon then i would worry about brake upgrades. trying to stop 37s and 2k lbs of trailer isnt gonna be easy for a stock brake setup.

Rawkon you have an automatic? if not you should be fine. I would be most concerned with braking since your on 37s. i have poor brakes after 33s

Towing a pop-up tent trailer????

I've got an 03 rubicon w/ 5.5" Rubicon Express lift, anti-rock sway bars, 37.5" tires. How squirly would it get towing a 2,200lb pop up trailer? Any experience towing with a similar setup?
