|jhilley||It's probably the lower steering shaft u-joints and the bearing, about $120 for new shaft with u-joints and bearing.|

If you have to replace it, using a Durango steering box is suppose to be an upgrade...

|jpdocdave||correct, the parts store does not do the rebuild, they purchase the rebuilt part from the cheapest source they can. sometimes a napa reman and autozone reman are from the same company, well then its ok to go with the cheaper of the two. don't be fooled by autozone lifetime warranty, i will buy a 2 or 3 year warranty part from napa before i'll buy a lifetime from autozone.|

|Helomech||I don't think idiotzone actually DOES the rebuild. They send them back to the vendor. However, I'll check with NAPA, there's one around the corner from my office.|

|jpdocdave||i'd stay away from idiot zone rebuilt parts, try a real parts store like napa or carquest.|

so is there a rebuild kit? Or you just swap it out for a new one? Is that like an Autozone thing? Or a specialty shop somewhere...
**edit** I see autozone has a rebuilt for $156.00 plus core charge.

|jpdocdave||ok, first make sure its play in the box and not something else. secondly, i've adjusted a dozen or so boxes, and its maybe helped once or twice, all the other times it doesn't work. what happens is you adjust it up and it doesn't change so you do a little more and then its too far and you have no return to center, the jeep is all over the road. basically the box is worn out, adjusting usually doesn't work. so you can spend a few hours making 10 attempts and it still doesn't work, thats been my experience on anything less than 20 yrs old.|

steering adjustment for play?
I recall on my '64 falcon that you could tighten up the steering box to eliminate some of the play in the wheel.
Is that something I can do on my YJ as well? I get too much side to side play in the wheel and would like to snug it up a bit.
