Badge1236 If he has the ford motor sitting around it might be worth putting in. If he has to buy one it would be a lot simpler to get one of the jeep 8's and put one of those in. He will probably have to have an adapter to hook up the ford engine and to a jeep tranmission and if he used the ford tranmission I do believe he would have to change the tail stock to make it compatible to a transfercase for 4wd. It would be a waste to change from a 4wd to a 2wd jeep. Good luck.

4Jeepn Well if he wants a V8 why not look into a the CJ v-8? was the 304 and 360? OR swap in a 4.7 out of a grand cherokee.

mud707 I do believe the t150 and model 20 is in mine also from what i can remember when I had to replace it. my nieghbor now decided to try to find a used 258 for it instead of his 306. Says he wants it to be all jeep. I knew something good had to rub off on him for being friends since 5th grade.

mud707 I'm not sure what my tranny is. It's been about 5 years since I messed with my cj. I put it in my shed on my farm planning to restore it for my kids first jeep. unfortunately by the time he is old enough to drive he will probably get my tj since I keep it in alot better shape.

it depends. I'm not 100% certain on the change over year but I know some 79s have the 300. I will start digging.

MR.CLIFFORD Yes, no, and yes.

The motor mounts will have to be replaced. The 3 speed tranny should probably go and you will need a new adapter to fit the dana 300 to the new tranny. The tcase in the 7 should be reliable enough to last. Of course that mount position is going to change so you will need a new tranny mount fixed to your new skid. Don't forget about shifters. Don't forget about gauges. Don't forget about everything else. There really is a complicated list. Check out They have a pretty good guide to tossing new motors in old jeeps.

mud707 O.k. Mr.Clifford.
Would he have to buy any special adaptors or motor mounts for it. the jeep is a 79 cj-7 and the engine would be from a 2wd 86 ford f150. also would his 3 speed transmission be compatible with my transfer case. if he need one in the future.
