wmwhitey LOL LOL I was about to make the stinger comment also but looks cleared up. to add to it I has a smittybuilt stood the jeep up once on it worked fine also slammed into a tree with it ad the mud on the hill was wet hit about 10-15mph to dead stop got out and had a scratch in the powdercoat that was it. sold the jeep with the bumper on it now I have a JKU with a PSC stinger and would trust it also.

You are incorrect. As my friends Jeep was in the same exact precarious position on his stinger that was welded (and braced- gussets I believe) to the bumper which was bolted to the frame. It held fine while I was hooking up the winch and pulling him back on all fours.

Specs:

1 & 3/4" x .120 wall HREW
1/4 old school warn bumper as a platform
Welded with 220 power

R51 Warn sells lots of winches, but I noticed Powerplants don't come with synthetic line as an option from the factory while some of the other models do. Anyone know why? Is there something about the powerplant that makes it unsafe/ less effective to run synthetic line?

Any stinger attached to the bumper would collapse. This is to frame.

When buying a winch, there's a lot to consider...and I'd rather have the extra capacity and not need it than to burn up a smaller winch and still be stuck.

And I always consider maintenance on anything I buy. It may be "cool" to have the latest thing on the block, but if you're spending gobs of time maintaining it, you have to factor in how much your time is worth. For me, I'd rather spend my time doing other things...like playing in the rocks or even just pounding gravel on a trail ride.

Not only did I compare features, I compared cost. My 10K Smittybuilt was $400 (delivered) and even if it fails in a few years and I buy another one, I still won't approach the cost of a higher end model. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have a Warn, but I couldn't justify the cost versus how much I'd use it.

Yes, a heavy blanket over the cable will work just fine to make sure you don't get hurt should the cable break. Obviously, "things" can happen...but they can also happen with synthetic.

As for the weight - that was a concern to me as well but going from a stock bumper with no winch to the set up I have now, the front only dropped about 5/8 of an inch so to me, that was insignificant and barely perceptible to the naked eye. (I have a 2.5" Teraflex coil spring lift with Bilstein 5100 shocks.)

Researching winches is a great thing to do, but you should to be prepared to know what you'll actually need so you make an informed choice.

Ditto on the Warn Power Plant

What so you mean by attached to the frame? All stingers I've seen are attached to the bumper which is bolted to the frame.

i82much I have the powerplant and have been very happy with it. Very convenient. I did a multi-mount with a front receiver, that setup is terrible for approach angles but I don't really "wheel" so much as "drive around in the forest and sometimes get myself into trouble."

Cheap winches but I have seen a lot of really good reviews. It is also one of the most bulky winches I have seen the control box is huge.

I have the Rugged Ridge 8500 and it works fine for me. I am doing a rear winch and it will be a 12,000 one. Just a personal preference to have more in the rear as if I am winching backwards then the Jeep is prolly getting drug as dead weight. Where a the front winch will have the wheels turning to help it. But for the money you are spending on the bumpers I would say go Warn just because. I went lesser expensive because I knew I would not and I have not used it much. Only twice over 1.5 years to pull my JKU out. I run it every 3 months and check bolts put anti seize on them as they put stainless steel bolts in aluminum which is very bad thing to do..

To me harbor fright is the go to place to buy a tool use it and return it. Most of their tools are crap. But hey they'll get ya by for a cheap fix sometimes. I'd rather spend my money once and spend it right the first time.

I did not know that thanks for the heads up. So who makes stingers that attaches to the frame. And since I'd like to go with the Metalcloak bumpers, won't that get in the way? Sounds like I may need to rethink which bumpers I'm gonna get.

OBWan I'm looking into a Recon 10,500lbs winch. Comes with a recovery kit, wireless remote, and cover plus synthetic line for right about $500. I've read some reviews and it looks good, no one really has any complaints about it. You can get it at Truck and Winch or ebay. For that price I could almost buy 3 of them for the price of a Warn..

fltopp1 Ok, stupid question here. I dont do a lot of wheeling where I would need one, so dont want to spend a ton of money. I have seen Harbor Freight advertise a 12000 lb winch for $300. Would it be worth it to try that or would it not be worth the time??

DaK I went with the power plant as it had the compressor and winch in one. With that said I recently had to return the unit to Warn for repair and while it was there did a trail run. We didn't need the winch for the run but that compressor would sure have been nice. Reason for the repair return was that while out on a trail last month in the UT desert the unit failed to reel in while on the trail in the heat. Gotta it back to the condo and it worked fine. Obviously a heat related problem. What got us was the winch that recovered us was a power plant. Warn stood behind their product by paying shipping both ways and for the full rebuild of the unit. So with that I am glad we went with the Warn. Have used the winch a few times with the synthetic line with no issues.

Even with the repair I have no regret buying the Warn Power Plant. Would I do it again? Don't know as ARB has that new twin compressor and less expensive winch. In the end would probably spend the same amount of money but have to carry another item in the back and as you are aware space is at a premium in a 2 dr.

Knuckles65 I just went through this research and here's what I can tell you.

Before you select a winch, decide on how your "finished" (are they ever really "finished"? LOL!) rig is going to be. Bigger wheels and tires? Lots of armor? What type of environment are you going to do your primary wheeling? Etc. You'll need that info for the weight of your fully loaded rig (gear, passengers, add-on's like tires, wheels, armor, etc.).

These were deciding factors for me.

On my 2 door Rubicon, I had made my mind up...I too wanted synthetic but...I went with a 10K pound winch with steel cable. Overkill? Possibly. But...I'll be wheeling in everything from sticky, thick mud to steep rocks. I wanted the extra "pull" of a 10K, it also has a faster line speed than the 8K I was looking at and it was cheaper. The maintenance on the line was easier too (wash it off, spray with a little WD-40, done...versus unspooling it all, washing the line in a bucket, respooling, etc.). Synthetic is supposedly safer in the event that the line breaks but maintenance and smart usage go a long way towards minimizing line breaks and damage to your rig and surroundings.

This is a piece of gear that you need to maintain regularly as you don't want any issues when you really need it.

I could have "gotten by" with an 8K, but decided for the extra $100, it was worth the "extras" to go with the 10K.

Synthetic or steel - this is a debate that will read something like "dino oil versus synthetic" and it really is your choice. Synthetic has it's advantages and disadvantages just like steel.

I can't comment on the Superwinch brand as I went with something else but I've not heard or read anything negative about them.

For the record, I went with a Smittybuilt XRC10 and Rampage full recovery bumper. The entire set up was a shade under $1,100 and here's the final product -

Choosing a new winch. Assistence needed!

Although I still have stock front and rear bumpers on my 2013 JKU. I intend to purchase the Metalcloak "build your own bumpers" ( Build Your Own Rugged Jeep Frame-Built Modular Bumper ) for front and rear complete with full stinger and tire carrier swing arm. In preparation, my multi part questions pertain to winches. (Please do keep in mind I'd prefer to run synthetic rope.) Ultimately which one I should choose and why? And between the two Superwinchs what are the pros and cons between placement of the solenoid box location? Does it even matter or is it a cosmetic preference? Note: **The differences I see between the two Superwinches based on the specs given on their website besides the solenoid location are size, weight, and type of fairlead. Here are the three winches I'm looking at.

1. Warn power Plant Dual Force HP ( Warn Industries - Jeep, Truck & SUV Winches: PowerPlant HP )

2. Superwinch Talon 9.5 SR ( http://www.superwinch.com/p/talon-9-...-lbs-12v?pp=12 )

3. Superwinch Talon 9.5i SR ( http://www.superwinch.com/p/talon-9-...-lbs-12v?pp=12 )

Also will these winches fit the Metalcloak "Jk Frame-built Steel Base" and if so which fairlead mount would I need?
