THIS is what I want to do but the only way I know of to do it is to replace the factory Jeep passenger grab handle with this machined aluminum grab handle made by Carolina Metal Masters.

I talked to Brian at Carolina Metal Masters yesterday (888-215-3815) and he expects to have 1" diameter machined balls that can be installed on the A pillar designed expressly for this purpose (Ram mount use).
Brian said they'd probably be making them in black anodized and a natural anodized finish.
Here's a pic of it installed with a Ram Mount attached holding a tablet:
They already make a grab handle for the A pillar that uses a ball similar to this - you can see it here:

You could pull yours off and go the the hardware store to see what size it is. You would then get the right size.

My understanding is that the passenger grab bar hex sockets you see are just fakes - not real bolts.
Personally I use Vector Offroad plus Ram mounts that clamp onto 1inch tubes.

|ohioviper||I mounted mine on the top of windshield frame above and to the right of rear view mirror. Used self taping screws and screwed the ram ball to the windshield frame. My Nexus is mounted on a 6" arm off that. I ran hard wire in the trim for usb power and aux cable. I had to cut out a place in the trim for where the ball sticks out. Only thing I might change is maybe a shorter arm. Mine is 6" I might go to a 4".I use co pilot or google maps with down loaded quads. It is a great gps and comes in handy for other stuff as well. I use the gopro app to wireless preview and control my gopro Hero 3 when recording trail rides as well as gps.|

You'd need whatever size ball that your holder accepts.
Edit: If you go to this site you can select the manufacturer and model of your phone and they can tell you what you'll need.
It looks like most of them use the 1"ball.

Ram Ball Mount
I would like to remove one of the bolts on the passenger grab handle on the dash and replace it with a Ram ball mount that is threaded. I have seen this done before, but need to find out which Ram ball to order. I want to use my Nexus is this location on long trips. The GPS on the Nexus works in places that do not have cell signal.
