I had to replace the belt and followed the manual, didn't make sense. Found the alt slot, loosened the bolts and retightened with tension on the alternator and no more probs.

|minderbinder3||Sounds like your belt is too tight to me. Better to fix it now before it ruins your alt or water pump.|

sounds like it needs adjusting to me, too tight could make it squeak, but that would have to be super tight, like the engine would be effected. i will only buy gates belts. goodyear gatorback totally suck, as do dayco. if you have either of those, take it back.
you said your power steering was leaking, did you refill it? is the pump seal leaking onto the belt? make sure nothing is leaking onto the belt, water pump leaking coolant, power steering pump and so on.

|Levinoss||I know mine squalled like a Banshee for the longest time. The belt was fine and had plenty of life on it. When it got wet it would stop, but as soon as it dried it would go back to the same shit. I changed it out with a better belt and it stopped.|

|NAVYCHIEF||my 4.0 squeeked like a banshee. on the 4.0 the tension is controlled bt adjusting the power steering pump. about 4 turna on the 1/2" tensioner bolt and viola, no more squeek. the bolt is under the pump and kind of tough to get at. have a look see on that side.|

ok enough of that, as far as the belt being too loose, not a chance, im actually worried about it being too tight, i had to move the alternator to install it and the tensioner is barely touching it. running tight could maybe be the problem??

Have you tried letting the engine warm up a bit before going?
I find that when I start my 4.2L, it squeeks rather LOUDLY but once I let it sit for 2-3 minutes it wont squeek anymore.

|Graybeard||Why your oil pressure went up I have no clue. If your water temp went up then your belt was likely not turning the water pump effectively. Therefore your belt must be loose causing the noise. Be sure the belt is tracking over each pully properly. If the belt is on wrong then it could be turning the water pump backwards ( I doubt it) The schematic for the belt is on a sticker on the radiator fan cowling. The problem is likely as simple as a loose belt. The adjuster should be under the power steering pump. The belt should only deflect 1/4 inch. Tighten it up and that should fix it. Good luck.|

she's a super squeeek, super squeek
hey guys once again a small yet annoying problem.
a few weeks ago i did a full tune up on my 95 YJ 2.5 manual. after about 6 trips to idiot zone i finally was able to find the right size serpentine belt. (which lead me to find out i have power steering that was just empty due to a small leak.
Now the serpentine belt USUALLY only squeeks for a few seconds after a cold start. But every once in a while it starts to be an ass, it will squeek when i take off in 1st, or sometimes just keep on going down the road which makes everyone stare. One night it kept on squeeking and my gauges (temp and oil pressure) went thru the roof, i refilled the coolant, but still hotm i turned the wheel all the way to the left hten the right, went forward a bit, and the squeeking stopped.
Any ideas on what may be going on with this ordeal or is it something i gotta live with?
