Your also going to need 2 passenger side soft brake lines and some hard line to hook all your brake gear up. Unless you have the 8.8 with drums and then I believe it will all bolt right up.

|87wranglerguy||Thanks, beside the adapter, do you know what if any other additional items I might need to make the swap? I would rather have all the items on hand at the time of swapping.|

|willness33||Ranger and Mustang 8.8s are 28 spline axles. Although not ideal, they are still marginally stronger than D44 shafts. They do not have disk brakes which would be a major improvement over the jeep drums.|

|4Jeepn||Lots of good write up's on the 8.8 swap.. some welding, but for the Yj it should be less than the TJ. The one thing you may wish to check on is on the width of the stang 8.8's. The one's I have seen swaped over came from explorer's which are just about the same width as the stock rear but feature 31 spline shafts, which are nice. I also recall something about the rear driveshaft to axle yoke/flange needing an adapter.|

thanks for the info. Regarding the 8.8...I have an 8.8 from another mustang. How difficult is it to make the changes ie..any welding or modicications to the rear end?

1st thanks for the job you are doing. 2nd as for gears, I have heard a lot of the 2.5 guys go with either 4.56 or 4.88's,but that is with the 5spd and 33's.You should have 4.11 right now.
As for a locker all kinds of choices. First decide how much you want to spend. There are full time lockers, which are always on, and others that you need to push or pull a button, via, air or cable, or electric. these of course cost more. The other factor to consider is your rear axle, which should be the dana 35. When you start going to bigger tires, lower gears and lockers in that axle, it tends to cause issues, with the smaller axle shafts it has. thus I have seen stock one's with a locker and 31's break, and stock one's without a locker run 33's just fine. There are several kits on the market that include upgraded axle shafts and a locker to beef up this axle. Some folks will put a dana 44 or ford 8,8 in the back, as these feature stronger shafts and other components. Lastly, a full time locker either in the front or rear axle, can make the jeep drive different than you or your wife are used to. I had one in the front along with some 33's on a snow covered road, and I put in back in 2wd to get home as it kept pulling me into the other lane. Thus read up some more, talk to some more people and go from there. As for names of lockers, there are ARB air lockers, detroit, lock-right, ox, to name a few.

Upgraded tires to 31's, now gearing issues
hope you can help me out here. My wife had just upgraded the tires to BFG 31 AT's and my 87 Wrangler is a 2.5L. In order to maintain a decent speed down the highway, what gearing do you recommend? Also, I wish to install a locker for my occasional jaunts in the mountains. I have read a little about them in the circulating mags, but still am a little nervous in making the purchase. Can you jeepers recommend what to buy?
