|Scuba Dude||Be happy you only had yours for a month and cant get the light to turn off. I have had mine for five years and have had the same problem. It has been at the Dealer 6 times in the past 3 months for Transmission problems. They rebuilt it the first time and 15 miles later, it went out again. They installed a new HD Trans(to replace the other Hd Trans) and 200 miles later, OUT. Today I dropped it off, and it is going out again. They say the tires are too big for the HD Trans. Then why did it get 47k miles on the first Trans, and 15, 100, 200, 1000... on the others? I feel for you. If you unplug the battery for ten minutes (then plug it in) and drive it slowly for twenty miles, you will pass smog, if your problem is not smog related. I have done this for 5 years. The light usually comes on around 30 miles or so.|

I've checked all the vacuum lines. They look fine, no cracks in the hard plastic ones and the rubber peices are still pliable but I know that it could be a very small leak that would require a smoke machine to find. I'd like to eliminate all the stuff that doesn't require taking it to a shop first. Even though the little peices are cheap, its still cheaper than labor at a dealership here in Hawaii. The steel line going to the gas tank looks in tact and does not appear to be pinched or cracked.
I know that I said EGR, my mistake, meant the Purge Valve Solenoid. I tested it with an ohm meter and it was open when disconnected. Is there any way to test the PCM to see if that is maybe causing the error? Since I'm getting a sputtering, and its mainly right after I start it up, could it be something to do with the PCM?
My A/C works fine but it hasn't been on when the error came on since I never use it.
I replaced my headers b/c they were cracked. I don't know much about evap systems so I didn't know if it had anything to do with it or not. Thanks for the info though, I'm glad to know that the upholstery on back seat didn't cause this error. I was begining to think that since I took my back seat out, that was the problem.
I will go buy a new gas cap today since it is cheap and reset the computer tonight.

|njkeagle||Try reseting the computer by disconnecting the battery.|

Code 31 - 1997 Jeep
""""" 31** An open or shorted condition detected in the A/C clutch relay circuit.
Insufficient or excessive vapor flow detected during evaporative emission system operation."""""
Maybe try working on the areas that are relevant?
Headers are not part of the evap system.
Neither is the EGR.
Nor is the TPS.
The upholstery on the back seat isn't either.
The evap system involves the vapor capture/recovery system from the tank.
Cap, Filler hose, charcoal canister and the associated vacuum lines.
Cap is very popular to go bad and not seal - may look good, but leaks.
Go under, look at the filler tube - cracks?
Look at the vacuum lines to the tank - loose, cracked etc?
Charcoal canister - broken, missing, vacuum lines to it?
Do a search on the internet as to the procedure to follow to find it.
Since your complaint also involves running problems, I suspect vacuum leak associated with the evap system.
Also notice the AC part of the code - yours quit? Related?
Sure would be nice to fix the part that's causing it rather than just throwing parts at it.

Yea, no autozone. The parts stores around here won't read them (liability issues) so I took it on base to have it read at the hobby shop for a $25 charge. Well, there was no communication with the computer to see if it had more detail than I got from the dash code.
Its not really a drop in power but it seems like its not getting the right mixture of something. Maybe not enough air?
Does the TPS has anything to do with the evac system? I cleaned the intake and TB really good when I had it all apart to do the exhaust. I seafoamed it as well and still no change. I know that its got to be something simple but just not sure what it is????

|Triksta68||wait you're in hawaii right? no Autozone...|
|09-11-2009 01:25 PM|
|Triksta68||for the accelaration issue mine did it but only when it had been running for a while. (too much heat over time) so i flushed and refilled the coolant with distilled water. but still did it but not so often. i then realized the tranny got hot as well. so i changed the atf. my jeep sat for 4 years while i was stationed in japan. now it doesnt do it. as far as the check light, i know how people feel about autozone but, go to autozone and have them read it. they print out possibilities for the problem on a reciept. all free of charge. thats what i do when i get stumped or to get a second opinion.|

Did you take it to a dealer or just start replacing stuff on your own? Also did you get the code from the dash or did you use a plug in reader.
As for the power drop, not our jeep but our durango would die at stops, was the TCM transmission control mod. Though that was on a auto tranny. Had to have it reflashed.. perhaps. I would look into TSB's for this and maybe see if a reflash of the computer might help.

Ready to give up
Okay, so I've had my Jeep all of a month now and I cannot get the check engine light to stay off. I come up with the same error code and when I think that I have it fixed, BAM! there it is again. Here is a rundown:
error code 31- leak in evac system
1997 TJ 105,500 mi
I just replaced the headers hoping that this stupid error would go away, I replaced the EGR solenoid a week ago, and checked and made sure all the vaccumm lines were clear and not cracked. What else could it be? When this error happens, its usually while I'm sitting at a stoplight and the RPM's will drop and it will sputter as I try and accelerate.
Next problem is I'm pretty sure my snychro for 2nd is going out! I drained the fluid, added new redline mt90 and still seems to be really tough going into second, some grinding as well.
Oh, and yesterday the temp cable for the a/c came disconnected. These aren't really big problems, but they are adding up quickly. If anyone has any advise, suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. And yes, I have already thought of just driving it off into the ocean.
