In most cases, a cat back will be louder.

How much louder depends on quite a few things. Not to mention that sound can be quite subjective.

The axle back should be quieter, especially at acceleration since the factory resonator would still be in place. I found some nice you tube videos that did a pretty good job of showing how loud each one was.

Aeschylus I am enjoying the sound from the 2.5 aFe hi-tuck cat back.

The tone did change a bit (for the better) over the first few weeks, but it has settled in quite nicely and I like it. I do not think it is too loud -- it could even be a tad louder and I would be fine with it -- but the tone is nice.

adolfsonzp I like the idea of putting on the Axle back.

legitposter Glad you like it. It can be scary starting it up for the first time! I love my afe axle back now that I've owned it for 3 weeks.

clvnmcd Hey guys, well I decided against all better judgement to go ahead and order up the full cat back max force with the muffler in the stock location. Installation was pretty easy, the rubber hangers can be a pain, but wd-40 helped get them off. The system itself went in quick and easy with great fitment. Now what I was worried about. Would the system be too loud without a resonator? I'm happy to say for me it's just right, not loud at all when idling or cruising, but sounds real strong when you have your foot in it. Sound is really subjective, but I think this is just right balance of sound for a Jeep.

take careful note of the sound / video's offered.
Also note that this clip includes the CAI. OP did not indicate having that or intending to install one. The CAI changes the sound and when you have one of those, what you're hearing is more intake than exhaust.

tlminh I installed the axleback 46-219 (axleback for 4 door, keeps stock resonator)

Have about 60 miles on it (1.5 weeks)

I have doors off, carpet out, plugs out

It is only slightly louder than stock.

But it fits my tastes perfectly, I ride with 2 toddlers and a 7 month pregnant wife and don't want to blast the music over the exhaust

Sometimes I wish I got a louder one, but if need be, I'll just cut the resonator

overblown I've got the axle back and I think it is perfect.

clvnmcd Good Point, I like the idea of putting on the Axle back and if it's still too tame I can cut out the resonator. Thanks Guys, much appreciated ideas!!!!

Marc W My suggestion would be to go with the 2.5 axel back and leave the resonator. Drive it and see how you like it. If you think it's too tame, go to a muffler shop and have them saw cut the resonator out and replace it with a short section of straight pipe. You now have a cat back. If it's too loud, raspy or drones, you can reinstall the resonator.
Or... you can spend more for the cat back and then if you don't like it... spend even more for a aftermarket resonator.
The only way to get out of limbo is have a plan and move forward.

Well there you go. Problem solved! And Aeschylus is right, sound is completely subjective to the listener.

I am running the 2d variant of the 2.5 hi-tuck cat back exhaust, and I like the sound.

Sound is pretty subjective - the ideal tone is in the ear of the beholder. I have seen people say the aFe is too loud, and others say the aFe is not loud enough. I have seen the same thing said about other brands, too.
09-10-2013 01:16 PM
overblown Getting rid of that resonator causes drone and increases volume overall. Simple as that, no limbo needed! Isn't the one that relocates the muffler 3" instead of the others 2.5" as well? Even more noise and drone if so. The cat back vs the axle back is really just a choice of more noise or less noise. No real performance gain. As for rock crawling, chances are you'll land on the bumper, not the muffler as it is tucked up pretty well.
09-10-2013 12:16 PM
clvnmcd Hey TOK Yup My problem as well. I'm in exhaust limbo.... I don't want to hear it drone going down the freeway, but I don't want it so tame that it sounds basically stock.

yengineer, thanks for the info on the Metal Mulisha, I was a little afraid they were too big for the wrangler.

I wish I could find someone with a completed exhaust I could hear in person, I guess I'll have to keep on the lookout.
09-10-2013 11:40 AM
TOK I have read here and other forums that the AFE has a pretty tame sound. A little louder than stock, but not overbearing. The one you're showing appears to completely eliminate the resonator.

Other people that have done exhausts that eliminate it on the Pentastar say it creates a raspy sound or more drone. I've been in exhaust limbo for weeks because I can't decide. lol

yengineer I have the Metal Mulisha and I can tell you that I'm regretting buying it. It sounds alright, and the tips looked good online, but I feel as if they don't fit the overall look of a Wrangler. I say go with the 46218, that's what I'm saving up for to replace the Metal Mulisha ones I have

AFE Cat-Back Exhaust, I think I'm going to Order..

I've been pondering a Cat-back for sometime now, I know I would see any performance gains. I've come to terms with that, what I'm wondering is does anyone have any experience with either the
aFe 49-46218
or
aFe 49-46212

The only only real difference in these two are muffler location, the 46212 is in the standard location at the rear of the vehicle, while the 46218 muffler is located before the axle. Leaving some pipe behind the muffler, I'm hoping that would reduce drone.

So what do you think?, any preferences?, has anyone ran these? I've read a bunch of posts and watched a ton of youtube videos, but I'm still left wondering.
I was also looking at the Metal Mulisha, I've got a black wrangler and like the look, but concerned the black tips were just too big and that I might crush them coming down off a rock. Other than that the sound was nice (but not the price...)
