MonkeyHouse I will be very careful and thanks that was very good information. It did seem strange but as long as that is the way it is supposed to be I'm cool with it. I just hope bleeding solves the issue.

copleydad Yes - it's supposed to move in and out.

No - no cover for it

Just be careful when you loosen up the bleeder valve. Mine sprung a leak and had to fix it - pic below. Managed to get it back together with some help; from the Lowes plumbing department.

My guess is you have some air in there also. Be real careful you don't break the pipe inside the trans housing or you'll be dropping the transmission to fix. Pretty poor design for a slave cylinder, but it is what it is. Good luck

MonkeyHouse That's what I was thinking, it just confused me that I could push in the clutch and start it without a problem, yet, couldn't take it out of gear. Another thing I noticed is that the bleeder valve moves in and out like 3 or 4 inches, is that normal? Is there any type of cover that is supposed to be there? Since I've found so much disconnected I was wondering if there was something missing there.

morphious sounds like u have air in the slave cylinder line go under and try bleeding it and see if that fixes ur prob

89 wrangler yj stuck in 4th gear

I recently got an 89 Wrangler YJ(4.2L, 6 cylinder). When I got it it didn't start. Whoever had it previously had left just about everything disconnected. I went over it and cleaned up connections, re-connected everything I found disconnected and it still wouldn;'t start. I then noticed a ground was sparking when I tried to turn it over, there was a loose ground at the alternator. After I tightened this up and set the timing, it started. It drove pretty well, but most of the fluid levels were low. I topped off the levels and took it out for a spin. I noticed that I had to push the clutch to the floor to change gears. It still seemed to have trouble changing gears. Then while I was out, I couldn't get it out of second gear. I got it back home and checked the master cylinder, which appeared to be dry. Once I topped that off, I was able to change gears easily. I went to move it friday and put it in forth gear mistakenly instead of reverse. Now, I cannot get it out of fourth gear. The pedal feels fine and if I push the pedal in it will start just fine and doesn't move or act like it's in gear, acts as it should when you have the clutch pushed in. So, I'm not sure if this is a clutch issue, a transmission issue or a problem with the linkage. And why did the problem clear when I added fluid to the master cylinder and then lock into fourth gear? Any ideas where the problem is or what I should look at?
