Welcome to the forums 87
You might want to look at jeep-classifeds.com. I've been keeping an eye on that site for a project rock crawler for me and a pavement pounder/project for my brother-in-law (would be his first vehicle). I have found that dealer will clean up vehicles pretty well and the telltale signs might be hard to find except physical damage to the skid plates. I agree with the others keep an eye out for dryed dirt in the breather housing and on the underside of the hood. Also look at the visable camber of all 4 wheels (jumping and abusive wheeling tends to bend parts and the camber is the easiest way to tell that IMO).

|Triple88a||RottnRudy i'm not the one buying the wrangler but thanks I did use autotrader to look for a wrangler. I found one wrangler at carmax and i was on my way there to check it out and i just happen to see a kia dealer with bunch of jeeps in front. I pulled over at the dealer ship and they it was my flaming red with 4.0 5 speed (only 40k miles) waiting for me I looked online to see if it was listed and it was listed on www.cars.com but not autotrader|

|Triple88a||I would look at dealers other than car max. I found my 00 jeep at a kia dealer (sport 4.0 5speed) for 13500 which we knocked down to 12750 and its a nice hard top with only 41k on the clock. I did look at carmax dealers but there everything looked over over over priced to me. They wanted 13999 for a 00 wrangler with 50k miles that ran like a 2 cylinder 5 liter tractor (rough). try reading this thread it might help you http://wranglerforum.com/showthread.php?t=4617|

|mrbigjeep||mud stains the engine pretty good so look under the hood.|

like pull the air filter and see if there's dried up dirt in the airbox. - that would help tell you if it's ever seen alot of water/mud.
crawl underneath and look at the tranny skid to see if it's all scraped/dented that would indicate rockcrawling and dropping it on rocks
mine's got mud stains on the underside of the hood where i've been through muddy water.
beyond that, just look it over good to make sure there's no leaking fluids, u-joints all seem good, etc. the 4.0 is a very reliable engine, so even one that's been slightly mistreated will still last a good long time.
that's a start....i'm sure others will chime in here with more ideas.

|Rockodile||Just remember the Rubicon is nothing more then a Sport with hybrid 44's and lockers. To do over I would buy the Sport and build it my way. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, not that I don't love my stickerless rubi!!|

I got my 01 sport not as many bells and whistles as the sahara but still a great jeep had only 50k miles for 10thousand dollars not a scratch on the body I bought it from a colledge chick who never got it dirty it looks brand new found her at
pick your state and area then search all for sale for jeep wrangler in the norfolk area they had 147 jeeps for sale ranging from 800 to 28000

|jherrin215||I looked and looked before I finally found the one that I wanted. I ended up getting a 2003 sahara with 42000 miles. It's loaded up, 6 cyl, 5 spd, dana 44 rear end and has never had a bolt turned on it. It's exactly what i was wanting. I bought it from carmax.com and was 110% pleased with them from start to finish. I paid 14999 for mine which is a little higher than you said you were wanting to spend, but I would say if you kept looking you could probably find something in that price range.|

Possibly Buying a Wrangler. Any help is appreciated
Hey guys, this is my first post here. And heres the deal. Right now i have a 95 f350 with 35' tires. Right now im getting about 7.5 mpg. I have to get rid of this thing, its killing me with gas. So my mother recommends a camry, and my father recommends a new f150. Well i think a nice medium would be a wrangler. Can anyone help me out to as what type would be good. So far i have about 13000 max to play around with. I like the 2003 year but i dont know if i could afford that. Also, since financially, rubicons are out of my price range, i really have a fondness for the sahara. Above all though, im looking for dependablility here. I dont want to buy an abused jeep so if you guys have any secrets on what to look for when getting a wrangler it would be much appreciated. Thanks Guys. Help a ford owner defect to jeep
