|cn.anglin||put the new spider gears in today. on the axles with the roll pin all you do is remove the main carrier caps and then you can get a 3/16 punch in there and tap the pin back enough for the center pin to slide out. turned out to be much easier than i thought. drove thed jeep around the yard but will take it on the road later to see if all else is good. if the transfer case is bad would it still move under its own power like it is and what can i expect if it bent the shaft in the t-case?|

|RednekYJ||I think 89 was the last year of the non C-clip D35. The obvious tell is 10" drums rather than 9".|

yes the transfer case was in neutral and so was the 5spd tranny. i was doing about 70 when the road dipped and i heard the bang. the transfer case still works when you put it in 2wd [ rear output turns] and when put in 4wd[both ends turn]. unable to tell if it will pull the front until my new driveshaft gets here for the front. it did no damage to the rear driveshaft .

Flat towing it with the t-case in neutral & the transmission in park-auto, low gear-manual I hope!
Either way, take 4jeepn's advice & take a good close look inside the T-case.
I'm thinking the T-case locked & twisted the front shaft & shock loaded the rear spiders.

|4Jeepn||not sure on the pin issues. However You might want to look over the case really well, or even just get a new one, no telling how much stress was put on it when the spiders blew.|

88 jeep yj rearend ???
while flat towing my yj from n.c to tx the rear spider gears exploded. the only thing it damaged was just the spider gears not the ring and pinion[4.88 and less than 3000 miles on them] thank goodness. at the same time the front driveshaft bent badly and i had to remove it in georgia. this i dont understand. the transfer case seems to still work when you shift in to 4wd the front yolk spins on the transfer case. i ordered a driveshaft for the front so hopefully it did not damage the front end. anyway i need to replace my spider gears. the question is this rear has a roll pin securing the center pin instead of a bolt like other rear ends i have been inside. does the carrier have to be removed to tap out the pin ? if so will the carrier come out by just unbolting the main caps [after axles removed of course] and what is the torque on the cap bolts? thanks chris
