n8s I'm a newbie too, but just found the site. I've had my Jeep for a few months now, and I've already seen precisely what's been said here. It seems to me that I am able to adapt my Jeep as I go along to MY abilities. As a novice, I could see where having an expert level Jeep could get me in a lot of situations that I'm not ready for.
Mine came used with a 2" lift. So far, that's all I've needed. It didn't take long for me to realize I needed better tires, as I went through a lot of mud and climbing. Although I was just looking for more traction, I decided I might as well get bigger tires. I went with some 32" BF Goodrich Baja champions on 16" wheels (also came with the Jeep) because they were a steal and my offroading friends said they were great tires.
Right now, that suits my needs. I haven't needed any more clearance than that. My next will probably be a winch (already got myself stuck, although that was because the stock tires sucked in mud).

I agree I guess I meant to say It rolls 32" tires, not bad. As in not too shabby. I would put the 2" lift to push 33's. Full Flex is nice. Why by 33's if your not gonna use them. $150 a tire is a lot to pay for looks.

Actually 32's are stock and 33's will fit without a lift unless you want full flex. Even then a BB will do the trick.

Mystake a TB spacer will not net you any more power. It simply increases the distance that air has to travel before it gets into the engine!

I hope you find what you are looking for in a new jeep. I've got the Rubicon Unlimited and love it. I get off the beaten path a lot with it and find it very capable. Happy hunting.

hey I am also new to the forum. I own a 2002 tj and have loved it. I am now looking into getting a LK 4door rubicon.

As far as lift... stock the JK will roll 32" tires not bad. 2 inch lift will give you clearance for 33" tires easy. Compare this with needing 4" to fit 33" tires under a tj.

redrockcrawler Hey Will, welcome to the forum. My wife and I recently purchased a 2009 X Unlimited 4 dr. So far, we've taken it on a couple moderate trails here in Tucson. We went with a co-worker who has a 2002 TJ with a 4 in lift. We were able to go everywhere he went. I am totally amazed how well it did. I am however going to install a small lift and larger tires because some scrapping occured, but no damage. Have fun!

I'd echo previous comments. Go wheeling with a group & figure out what you need. For light off road action, you probably don't need any lift. It will adversely affect your on road handling - just a fact of life. Higher center of gravity goes with poorer cornering. It's a good tradeoff if you need the lift and a bad one IMHO just for looks.

Fweaky Hello new fellow jeepers, I have owned jeeps for many years. I would have benifited greatly and saved a lot of money over the years if I had had this forum to ask opinions and questions over the years. There are many others on this site with much more technical knowledge than myself that would be glad to give advice so just ask....and welcome to the club...

Hi Will and welcome to WF.

You have a lot of questions above so I am going to answer with my best answers by the numbers. I put numbers above and will answer by that number below.

1: Well, the guys have been giving the advice on this forum to go out and use the jeep on the trail (with a group of experienced wheelers) and decide what you will need based on your experiences. I have been following this advice and consider it wise to do this.

2: Side steps make for easy entry but make it difficult to wheel it (wheel = off road). Large side steps typically need to be taken off prior to going out into the woods. The Rubicon comes stock with rock rails. I can't use them to step up but it does protect the jeep from certain types of rub rash while wheeling. Give it a while and see what you think based on trying trail runs using conservative driving techniques. I am in the process of joining a jeep club that goes off road. They do all sorts of various difficulty types of jeep runs. I have been doing the easy to moderately difficult max so far was a 6 to 7. I can see a few things I will want but will wait until I can afford them.

3: Depending on how rough the trails are, will determine what type of equipment will be needed. Rock rails, skid plates, armor for sensitive parts such as the differentials or oil pan, etc. A lift was something that should be high on the list I am told. The jeep is quite capable out of the box but on the run that I went on, I could see the need for more clearance under the jeep.

4: A lot of people on this site have been advising that a throttle plate is a bit like snake oil. Best to stay away from them. Gearing on the differentials will provide more torque than doing minor adjustments to the power plant I'm told.

5: There is some cool factor in a lift and large tires. If you are going to take your jeep out into the woods, lifting will come in handy. I plan on lifting mine 3 to 4 inches as mentioned above. Lifting probably first, then maybe larger tires. Once you have larger tires though that may necessitate the purchase of gears to allow more torque and crawling at the low end of rpms.

6: I have been using turtle wax ice on my fenders. It keeps them black, slightly glossy (compared to no wax), and repelling water. Many of the guys on the forum use ice on black plastic parts both on the outside of the jeep and inside too. It beats armor all hands down. No greasy residue and makes the plastic look nice. Try this and see what you think. It won't make the plastic look gray like other types of waxes. I don't think Ice is a wax product at all, it is a synthetic polish. I can't say enough about this stuff, it really works.

Hope some of this helps. I know some of the others will chime in with their opinions as well. This is a great place to look for information. The forum prides itself on being very friendly and this has been my experience pretty much since I have joined. Happy posting.
