|reno92||I'm just throwing this out there. I was chasing down a tick that sounded like yours, did everything you said. I could have sworn it was a valve. Putting the steth to it I discovered it was a small piece of my serpentine belt that was hitting the shroud. Replaced the belt and it was gone. So use the stethoscope and look internally and externally.|

Check your valve springs for a broken one and double check the manifolds again.
Its surprising your "engine guy" says its not his problem considering he is the one that rebuilt it. I am assuming that when he redid the pistons etc he checked the rod bearings etc.
When you had the valve cover off did you check the rockers and pushrods?

|BA93wrangler||yeah I can hear mine all the time but if I rev it up to 1500rpms even with my head out the window I cant hear it. anything lower and its really loud. but if I have my hood up and am listening I can hear it change from a tick tick tick to a rattle its louder on the passenger side im not sure if it is running lean or what. it used to get hot after setting idling at a drive thru or something but would cool off after a couple mins of driving. It never gets hot now because I ditched the old fan and put an electric one on( nice to kill the fan when entering a mud pit, why spray water all over the engine, plus u can leave the fan on to cool it off when your done). I haven't bean able to get it to a mechanic yet but will soon when I find anything out I will post it right away. if I cant fix it at least I can post how many miles I got on it before it goes boom. ive heard they will run forever like this but an engine is definitely not supposed to tick this loud especially on a fresh rebuild... going to a mud run Saturday guess we'll see if it survives. abuse cant help my engine but it might hurt it. at least ill remember why I keep buying jeeps.|

|manasterskimike||and another thing, at 5am when im on my way to work i can hardly hear it the temp is prob 55 even when its under a load and i live in the foothills. but when im on my way home from work around 4 and the outside temp is 85-90 i can hear it with no problem.|

|manasterskimike||mine gets louder under a load and please keep us updated i have done pretty much everything you have done. it dosent seem to affect the performance of the jeep and my mph is still there i run 10w40 amsoil and there is about 135000 on it aswell|

unplugging the injectors one at a time really doesn't change anything it quiets down a little but only because of the lower idle. when I rev it past 1500rpm it turns into more of a rattle. I have had the tappet cover off and everything is tight, I didn't see any obvious causes and there is no play in the pushrods. I have tried seafoam (didn't notice a difference), I had my engine guy tear it down again and he replaced all the pistons and put a new cam and lifters in it (for the second time). when I took it back to him for the third time he told me it was not his problem anymore. I am really at a loss now Ive tried octane booster, seafoam, vr1 racing oil, new injectors, plugs, wires, distributor, even a different computer, throttle body, map sensor, crank sensor, ect ect. I will have it scoped tho (only thing left). it also has started leaking oil from the pan gasket only when running tho and not enough to notice on the dip stick. fyi if you live in Michigan it was accu-pro racing engines in Newaygo that built it so beware.
I will have it scoped. should I run thicker oil and some lucas or is thicker oil just a waste of time... some people have said that its just a ford knock (because of the similarity's between the 4.0 and the ford 300 i6.)
thank you for all the input anymore ideas are appreciated I will keep this updated so If we find the cause everyone will know thank you

Does it get worse under load? If not, may be another exhaust leak. I've heard credible accounts of using Lucas Oil treatment or Seafoam in the oil that will unstick a lifter. If it just collapsed, I doubt that would help.
Also x2 on the stethoscope. I use mine all the time.

I hate ticks, they carry lyme disease.

|Jeeprich25||X2 on lifters. Maybe bent rod? I'd pull the valve cover and give everything a jiggle. I have a slight tick but its from my leaking manifold I have yet to fix. Good luck!|

|manasterskimike||im pretty sure i have the same problem. i and i want to fix the tick! its really anoying|

|2fastc||if you pull one plug wire at a time the noise should stop when you find your problem cly.|

Collapsed or bad lifter, bad pushrod or rocker arm???? Just because the torque is good is no guarantee. You might want to pull each one out and look for wear.
But before I do that I would get a mechanics stethoscope and narrow down the noise.
Timing chain against the cover, maybe the slingers is in wrong/missing or the rubber guide wasn't installed???

really loud tick
I had my 4.0 rebuilt and it started ticking at about 50- 100 miles. when I start the jeep it is a constant tick tick tick sound it doesn't matter hot or cold and it is as soon as I start it and never goes away or quiets down. sometimes it will be accompanied by a quieter tapping noise but only for a few seconds and then goes away. It did have a crack in the header that was welded at about 500 miles. I now have about 3000 miles on it and a couple oil changes. the ticking sound is very loud and increases speed with rpms. I haven't lost any power and it doesn't burn or leak any oil or coolant. but it does miss fire at idle (rpms don't change but you can feel it). It isn't throwing any codes but it scares me and other people just shake there heads when they walk by. I don't want it to die anytime soon any ideas? (already had rocker arm torque checked all is good)
