Fweaky Thats a great video...I bet if we remove the differential and put drums on both wheels like they had there at the end we could get our gas mileage up to maybe 15 or 16 MPG!
............Well, maybe not the circus performers would probably give out in a mile or two!

turdhurdler Great vidoe. It shows in great detail how everything meshes together. But I really like how the importance of safety was observed even back then.

ExDementia I love things like this that show you just how ingenious different parts of our cars really are.

P.S. thanks for sharing, I've been having the hardest time trying to explain that to my GF (and it made me understand it better too)

How a differential works (retro film)

OK, so I was over at one of my other haunts and found this really cool old film.
Most of the seasoned guys here will just find it kinda fun while the folks that are relatively new to mechanics will find it informative. You may want to skip into the film to about 1:50 to avoid watching the motorcycles perform stunts and maneuvers. But, all in all I think it's a cool, laymans way of understanding how a differential works. Once you get the gist, factor in lockers. Either way you'll begin to understand the physics behind how your Jeep conquers terrain.

Enjoy
