I was tempted to type a long post using all abbreviations... and was gonna throw in at the end "And now a word from our sponsors (ANFAWFOS)...take it away, Geoff!"

s3nt3nc3d There's a difference between "prolly, ain't, goin', gonna, y'all, etc...and IM speak (which is what we used to use before text messaging).

One is verbal slang...more widely used in the south, but even us northern "rednecks" tend to use it at at times. Sometimes it's shorter...and sometimes it's nothing more than simply being incorrect, but I personally like it in informal conversation. Now if I were at a meeting somewhere and everyone spoke like that...no way...not gonna work. lol

Best sentence in the world using southern slang... "Ain't ain't a word, and I ain't gonna use it!" (or my buddy from Arkansas' favorite sentence-- "Look at the sh*tter on that critter! DAYUM!")

Nowadays you've also got IM speak (or texting) which is 10x more annoying than southern slang...

Manolito I care how people treat the old,me, and mine. What else they do is none of my business. There were people that complained about all sorts of things while others exterminated an entire race. I am here today because a young CAJUN boy had my six and he didn't write very well at all. Just sayin.

Thank You. I agree completely.

I'm sure most of my posts probly aggravate the hell out of you Cain. The only thing worse then would be for you to have an actual conversation with me. I'm not heavily educated. I hold no degrees. In fact, the only skills I possess are the ability to give you CPR, spray wet stuff on red stuff, and rent-to-own. I'm a pretty good speller, and I know my punctuation pretty well, and if I have to type or write a letter, you can bet it's gonna look like my English teacher from high school wrote it. As far as day to day speaking goes, I'm gonna lazy it right on down a bit.

I live somewhere smack dab in the middle between Podunk, Texas and You Got a Purty Mouth, Oklahoma. Day in and day out I deal with people that may or may not have a 9th grade education. The dialect here is a cross between slingblade and ebonics. English was beaten with a stick and hung up from a tree years ago around here. If I go using proper sentance structure and pronunciation, folks is gonna start starin at me like I'm speakin French.

I for one like my country accent, and country way of talking. Keeps me from sounding to citified and up tight. I say yall, darlin, gonna, probly, yep, huh uh, uh huh, you bet yer, huh, sonbitch, you piece a , and all kinds of colorfull bastardizations of the English language. It's not that I'm a dummy, or inbred, or tarded....It's just how I choose to speak and type at times. Oh Yeah, I also use the hell out of ....

But by God you can bet yer ass I'll always get to and too correctly.

Yall have a good day, ya hear

David III Someone turned to me a few days ago and said she wanted me to read a really funny joke that she had received as a text message. I looked at the screen on her phone and then asked her what language that was.
She called me a "dumazz" and said it was English.
I was completely serious. I could not decypher anything on that screen. Guess I'm too old to figure out new English.
About an hour later, that same lady asked me to buy her a drink - I pointed out that I was a dumazz and could not figure out how to abbreviate money. Maybe if some of these younger people would read this stuff to me once in a while, I'd be able to pick it up.
12-14-2009 12:05 PM
debruins would u like us all to revert to the middle english? I'm sure those that lived hundreds of years ago are rolling over in their grave at ur ;-) everyday use of you instead of thou etc.

how about old english?? It isnt even comprehendible with only the knowledge of current english.

Pretty soon we will have a new, new english that will contain all the abbrevs of 2day.

Get over it, stuff changes, dont be the old fart that is annoyed about it :-P

"Well, I have sat down and compiled a list of words that I do not want to see on my internet. I have consulted with Al Gore and he agrees."
There, I have fixed it for you.

Prolly - P.R.O.B.A.B.L.Y bitches!
I'll prolly use this word a lot more now, just 'cause you called me a bitch.
pwned - OK, I know the "p" is right next the "o" but COME ON!!! Attention to detail people!!!
teh - What are you dyslexic?!
Yes, as a matter of fact, I am. It's something I've fought with my entire life. Thank you for making fun of my disability
fab - Unless you are making something out of metal SHUT UP! "fabulous" is a word used by interior decorators ONLY!!!
This from a man in a satin and lamé mask?
fav - In it's short form, how the hell am I supposed to know it has a long "a" in it? Is it really that hard to type the "orite" part of that word? NOPE, I just did it!
See "fab".
w00t - WTF? Are you an Owl?
Yes, I have to agree with this one.
your - Even though YOU'RE wrong, you have to write out YOU ARE.
you're - You have to write out YOU ARE. This should end the confusion.
No, there is no excuse for laziness. People should just use the proper word or contraction. If a dyslexic bitch like me can figure it out, others can too.
ANY WORD WITH A NUMBER IN IT! - Yeah, we get it. You are an ingenious and creative individual. Just like every one else! Retard!
First you call me a bitch, now you're calling me retarded?!? You're just jealous 'cause I gots teh l33t mad skilz an you don.
Fo Shizzle - Ebonics are bad enough without you having to rip off another ethnicity's made up words. Here's a clue for ya skippy. If you still live with Mommy and Daddy and you drive the minivan to school... You are most certainly NOT gangster! Tone it back white boy!
Word, homeboy!
OG - You see this a lot on Craigslist and eBay. That rusted out old Plymouth is NOT "OG" (original gangster) with "OG" parts! If it has gangster parts in it, maybe you should bury those before you try to hock this thing! Just write out "original" and be done with it!
I've never seen this, and I spend a lot of time on Craigslist. Must be a commiefornie thang.
Bling-Bling - Do you use sound effects to describe all the things you can't afford?
The only time I use that phrase is when I'm making fun of something.
Jus a lil somethin' somethin' for yas.

tlrrob1000 Too much time on your hands ygohome? That would have taken me a week to type. With using abrevs.

11-13-2009 10:12 PM
Levinoss Pwned is not just a misspelling and has widely debated history. Have you ever played chess? Typing with your face is one thing but slang has value to the cultures that it exists in and slang words have been around longer then the internet has existed. Love it or hate it but slang will always be around.

The written language I think has a lot more to say about a person then what is just on the paper. Maybe Tiny can chime in about it as she in fact writes her self? I might just be reading into this a little too much.

11-13-2009 11:35 AM
Levinoss A lot of my short hand comes from playing MMO's and some RPG's. You have to type fast because that extra 2 seconds could mean being pwned or owned. It carries over into real life some times but I try my best to fix it when I see the mistakes. I really have to make my self slow down and go over what I'm typing out on forums and you will usually see me edit long posts about fifty times. I will type something so fast that my error rate will be through the roof. I do notice that I type things so fast that I'll even type out words I didn't mean to type. I noticed on my resume yesterday before a interview I typed Contraction instead of Construction. Good thing I caught it before I had left the house for the interview.
