wolfen Oh contrair my friend, I never said open diffs make it harder, but there should be a >that< between cause and mud on line 3, cause that area back there is so deep, there's no way anything that isn't 2 feet from ground to diff bottom can make it through.

You are right about lockers and bigger tires though, but I would recommend LSD's instead of lockers, they are smoother going around corners. But then I've had LSd's al my life and never had a locker at all

Also if you have open diffs then losing traction is the worst enemy you have.
Kinda just contradicted yourself there, said mud canceled out everything but then said open diffs make it harder in mud.

I believe the latter, I think having lockers makes a huge difference along with type of tires and how big. That is of course my opinion on very little wheeling and watching others get stuck.

wolfen I've seen one that can remove a broken part and repair it, and I'm 46 years old, I've done all my own work since 1981, cause basically like you said they pull a part and replace a part.
I find it much easier to come to forums like these for each vehicle I have and just read other peoples ideas and suggestions because like on here, SOMEBODY has or has had the same problem.

RedWrangler I was trying to be charitable to the few that work there for the paycheck, but still have the knowledge and skills of a real mech. But overall, I would tend to agree with you on that, except, I would further qualify it to doesn't know anything but stock factory replacement of parts. I've never heard of a dealer service mechanic completing a repair of anything. All they know how to do is pull a part and put in a new one, even if it doesn't fix what's wrong.

What do you mean they "might" not know squat LOL I have yet in 46 years to meet a dealer mech that knows anything but stock factory repair.

Personally I would never trust a welded diff gear at all, its known as a poor mans locker, and it could seriously damage the differential depending on which one you have. You CAN replace the rear end with a LSD (Limited Slip Differential) But not knowing what motor or gears you currently have make sure you get the same gear ratio you have now.

RedWrangler Take it to another mechanic. The dealer mech's may not know squat about a mod. They tend to be flat rate mechs, and nothing more.

sucker Hello, hope this is the right place. I'm a sucker. Just bought a 97 TJ and was told it had detroit lockers. due to jumping and skidind I took it to a dealer to check out. Was told the gears were welded. What are we talking about to R&R with detroit lockers with a much lower ratio ( to Match the tires ).

It was the best thing I ever did. It's a very taxing two day experience but the tremendous support you have will teach you all you need to know. Get on their web site and take a trip next year. The fear will be gone never to return again. The experience is worth every penny it costs.

Ok your a civilian who worked in a Navy yard, how did I know you were associated somehow with the Navy Could it be that after 20 years active I found your comment about anchors as a great idea? I am planning on getting a winch, but now thanks to you and some careful though, I'm going to get a boat anchor to go with it, cause it does make sense.

And beepbeepI'minaJeep should listen to your bandsaw comment too, fear can often be your best friend

Geoff@Bestop OK, I don't want to be one of those people that gets all critical on spelling, but I know you're off to college next year, and that you live in freakin' Dallas, so I'm going to correct this.

"Null" - this is a word that means empty or nothing.
"Knoll" - this is a word that means small hill.

So "grassy knoll" is the phrase you're swinging for, and missing. This is an important phrase in the history of the country, and especially in Dallas. And especially when it's close to November 22nd.

RedWrangler I'm interested in the superwench. Is she hot? Does she have a magic lasso or something else kinky like that? At 9,000 lbs, she must have a really wide posterior.

The AT tires are compromise tires, and they will never excel in mud. That being said, swampers and other super mud tires suck on pavement. They're noisy, get crap mileage and don't wear particularly well. They may also create handling issues.

Lot's of guys trailer their rigs to the trail heads to avoid driving a hard core crawler on the highway. I've also seen guys trailer tires and swap out at the trailhead.

The winch is great, but you need an ancher point, or as I've heard tell, but not seen yet, some guys have used a danforth. That's a bit scary, as if it comes loose, that's a good bit a metal that could go flying.

I also agree that you should always have a recovery strap, but I doubt I'd have mine at the mall, as sans security, it would likely get stolen.

Reducing tire pressure makes a huge difference in any loose ground situation. I'll usually go to about 12 lbs.

And whenever possible, especially when planning on challenging your rig's abilities, ride with at least one other rig. That way, you can recover each other should one of you become stuck.

little1989jeep why be afaid getting stuck broke and dirty are all part of the game and the more stuff you bolt/weld on the farther you go but the harder and deeper you will get stuck and broke

omgwtfbbqcopter Hell, I'm 19 and just bought my first jeep. I remember when everything I did to the car had to go through the "father test" and how I hated it. Looking back, he was right on every aspect... well except my TJ. I bought it and called him up and told him it's lifted and got 35"s on it and he flipped out. He said "big tires only lug a vehicle down, lift kits just raise the center of gravity blah blah blah blah i did it when i was young blah blah blah blah it's not what its cracked up to be blah blah blah blah you're gonna hate it blah blah blah blah....."

LOL

Granted, I live in Germany and he's in New Jersey so he really can't do anything but give me advice, but once I return to the states I'm gonna remind him how much fun a lifted vehicle can be, and how fun off roading is. I took his truck mudding (by accident... i had to recover a come-along my friend left in the woods and I didn't know it was muddy lol) but when I got home he looked at his truck and went "what.....the.....F" and after a few minutes he commented on how cool it looked but i better get all of it off in 1 hour with wax and tire dressing. LOL

thewhoissuperb24 I've got a real long way to go before I can even think about getting my own car. My hometown economy sucks! And I'm almost 19 (I've been a year older than most people in my class..yay class of 2010)

For quite a while I've been telling my parents I want a Jeep. So far..no avail.

As for fear of doing things in a vehicle...hee hee..I'm usually wild and sometimes crazy when it comes to offroading..it's been my life, and I guess a passion.

That was my problem too, as soon as I turned 18 I bought my wrangler, put it in my name, and got my own insurance so I can do whatever the heck I want to it

BeepBeepImaJeep Its got to be my Terrible tires... once mine wear down, its the KL71 MT's or Pro Comp Xtereme MT's.... my father has them on his titan and they preform well.

jdhallissey Fear- You would be amazed at what a jeep can do and go even stock. There is not much to worry about - yea the mud terrains might be a little worn out but they will stick well even a little low on tread
