Also, with the TJ's having the lever for engaging 4X4, it's not like those SUV styled push-button vacuum operated ones, where it might/might not engage.
Unless there's really something wrong with the lever assembly (which you should notice when you pull on it), you pull the lever.... you're in 4X4.

|05GT-O.C.D.||Mine's out. I consider it a blessing. No need to have the light there. I know when I've pulled up on the lever, you can hear the front driveshaft engage and feel it kick in and out. The light just comes on and off when you pull the lever up and down if I recall.|

Mine sometimes doesn't light up, but sometimes it does.
Like Jerry said, you can definitely tell when it's engaged.
Gonna check that plug when I put my lift on.

|Jerry Bransford||It's pretty easy to tell by simply driving it if it's in 4Hi or not, the steering will start bucking & there will be a dramatic difference in how things feel on dry pavement when you're in 4Hi. If it's actually in 4Hi and the bulb is not illuminating, it could simply be that the wiring harness plug at the top of the transfer case is unplugged. The previous owner might have done it for whatever reason. The connector is on top of the transfer case, near the edge on the passenger side. A mirror and a flashlight will help you find it.|

No 4WD Light
i bought a 2001 jeep wrangler a couple months ago and the 4WD light doesn't turn on when i pull the lever. I've heard this may be a sign that the 4WD isnt working but I'm not sure if its not engaging or the bulb is just blown or something small.
