Hey Schmo, I just posted a thread about noise in my tranny, just in 2nd gear. I've been all thru the driveshaft, changed all fluids and it did not make a difference. Hope you find your problem.. mistert

Hey Beast . . . grab your drive shaft and give it a wiggle . . . and see if there is play in the Double Cardan Joint. If so, remove the DS and drive around in 4WD and see if the noise is still there. I thought this was my tranny or clutch too, but seeing that the noise is gone now that I removed the DS and seeing the play in the double cardan, chances are it's just a worn Centering Ball or Cup. From what I've heard, a DS rebuild will set you back 100-150 bucks . . . a drop in the bucket compared to a tranny issue.

If your DS is the issue, i know a guy who has a Tom Woods Driveshaft for 4" lift possibly up to 6" he could sell you for cheap and ship for $10.45
if your rebuilt or rebalanced one doesnt work.

|Beast Skills||hey it seems like i have almost the same issue. there is sometimes this rattling or grinding sound when I'm in lower gears. i think its probably something with the tranny or the clutch. clutch is relatively new, so i don't think that's the problem. i really hope this is fixable, i don't know how much i can spend to fix this.|

Hopefully rebuilding the DS will do the trick. I really think it was the culprit and hopefully nothing else was damaged by it rattling around back there. I'll put the rebuilt/rebalanced DS on and see if that does the trick, for the time being, I'm cruising around in front wheel drive.
I just thought I would post up what I found in case someone else had a similar issue!

Hey Schmo, sounds like its your T-case. I see 2 options here,
Sell your Rubi and get another
or Buy a Atlas II T-case, I know a guy selling it for $1800 (not me)

HELP . . . This doesn't sound good
I have a 2006 Rubi with a 6 speed manual and 45K miles. After arriving at my parentís house for the holiday weekend, I started hearing a slight rattling/flutter type of noise in 2nd gear when decelerating if there was a load (not coasting). I got under the Jeep made sure the rear CAs were tight and lubed up the Rear DS and the noise seemed to go away. Then on the way home when I got off the fwy for gas and dropped down into lower gears, the noise came back and was more severe. After gassing up, I got back on the fwy and the noise went away once I got up to speed, but when I hit the Grapevine, I noticed a huge difference in power and needed to keep the engine around 2800 RPM. If I was under about 2500 and put a load on the engine, it sounded louder than usual as if it was reving higher. I started thinking the clutch might be going out. Then when I got to my off ramp, the noise was awful and I really had to get her above 3000 or more in the lower gears for the noise to go away. In neutral, having the clutch in, or when coasting (without a load) everything seems to be like normal, but when there is a load on the engine, under 4th gear, the noise is there, kinda of a rattling, clanking, type of noise, and in higher gears it sounds like the engine is reving more than normal. Iíve had clutches go out in the past, but there was not this type of noise, just slipping more like what I was experiencing when on the freeway. Seeing that the engine seems to be running fine, and everything is smooth when coasting either in neutral or with the clutch in, Iím guessing it has to be either the clutch or the tranny . . . any ideas and/or recommendations? I bought an extended (but not from the factory) warranty when I bought the Jeep, so Iíll be calling them in the morning to see what all they cover and where I can go and be covered. Any help would be appreciated.
