s3nt3nc3d You can get cans that are designed specifically to keep them from going kaboom in the event of an ignition source getting too close...I'm thinking they're just called "safety cans". Never messed with them myself...but read about them in my OSHA 10 training a year or so ago.

Also, don't forget to add fuel stabilizer to your gas or you may end up trying to run your generator on varnish when you need it most...I think Stabil can keep gas fresh for up to 2 years if you double the recommended dosage.

whiteyj Having just moved to rural WA from the SF Bay Area we're new to the generator thing this year. I guess my neighborhood was out something like 14 days last winter.

I am keeping the two Jerry cans on the Tire Carrier Full plus two six gallon plastic jugs out in my shed. No plan to try and screw around with pulling gas out of even the YJ. Don't think it would be worth the grief.

I wouldn't bother, you'd need a special hose & schraeder adapter and it'd be a slow process since the fuel pump doesn't pump much volume. I wouldn't give any more serious consideration to using the TJ as a source of gasoline for your generator.

Jerry Bransford It's pretty impossible to siphon gas from a TJ's gas tank, it has an anti-siphon device as I think most other gas tanks now have as well.

A shraeder valve is just like what your tire valve stems are, the one on the fuel rail is just much bigger. Look for its screw-on plastic cap and if you unscrew it, you'll recognize it as being just like an oversized tire air valve, complete with that little center pin you can depress to let the pressure out.

david Thanks for the reply, but I dont know a schrader valve from a heart valve . I may try to stick a tube down the tank & see what happens. Dont have a storage place for gas other than my garage. Im sure I can find a way to blow up my house !

350chevrolet i think the jeep gas tank has the anti siphon part on them to but im not 100%. easiest and cheapest thing that i can think of would be to get a fitting to screw on to the schrader valve on the fuel rail that will open the valve and put a tube on it. turn the key to the "on" position and the fuel pump will pump the gas out for you. but personally iv never had a problem storing gas around the house, theres probably 20-30 gallons in my shed rite now, just keep stabil in it and it wont go bad.

Gas storage for generator

Have a generator for emergency use at my house. Has anyone tried to siphon gas from gas tank on jeep. Some tanks like on my Yukon have devices in filler to prevent this. I hate to store emergency gas in cans to leave around the house so it would be nice to use my jeep as a storage tank for gas for use in emergency
Thanks... 2001 TJ Sport ... 6 banger
