scott howard Never heard of leaving a old gasket on.
I would scrape it off and use the fel-pro .

Pylonpounder Okay, thanks. Yeah, I thought it was ridiculous. I have the fel-pro cork gasket, hopefully it will work well. And no, I haven't removed it yet. It's not a necessity, and it's been colder than I'd like..so I'm being lazy for a little while longer :P

turdhurdler Have you already taken the valve cover off? I replaced the gasket on my 6 cyl to stop a leak. Did not recall any sort of cured gasket there. I also used the felpro replacement made from rubber. The one I replaced was made of cork wood. Since I replaced it, no more leak from there. Good luck.

Valve cover gasket?

I have a 94 2.5L 5 speed, and am taking off the valve cover today to clean out all the gunk that i'm sure is in there from the previous owner not taking good care of it. However, in the Chilton book I have it says that there is a "gray cured gasket material that should not be taken off, and if any pieces are missing the cover MUST be replaced" But, I have a felpro replacement valve cover gasket...so do I use the gasket and scrape off the old one, leave the old one there and use the new one, or just use the old one?
