04wranglernoob Noticed a broken link this morning. Didn't know how to go about the fix, thought I could just re-insert the ball joint : /

I'll go buy some replacements instead. Thanks guys

Bpoch Thanks for all the info guys. I went ahead and replaced them with normal ones from Auto Zone tonight. Had to run to Pep boys to borrow a pitman arm puller. I banged the crap out of the ball joint and it didn't budge. I even busted a hammer trying to use it like a crow bar, guess I'm stronger than I thought.

I'll add some disconnects when I have the extra money, it's just a little tight right now.

I have done the research and have sledgehammer ready to go!! If it comes down to it I can run up to pep boys or auto zone and rent a tool for it. I've seen some instructions using a pitman arm puller. Though I'm hoping to put my 8 years of martial arts training to use and just judi chop it.

I'm gonna blast it with some PB the night before.

Neil F. If you are not in need of disconnecting, you can get solid links from just about any of the suspension manufactuers. They are cheaper that disconnects and do not have the weak ball/socket design. Zone has low cost ones and you can get them on Amazon.

Reznor Just be careful if you're going to drive on regular roads/highway without a front sway bar. If you need to do any emergency moves, the results could be quite terrifying.

I had an XJ which had the link break on it, and I needed to drive it until I fixed it. As luck would have it, someone cut me off on the highway and I swerved to ensure we didn't have an accident. I damn near lost control, and I figure a less experienced driver well might have.

I know the Jeep "feels" fine. But the real stress isn't put on the sway bar during normal driving. I really wouldn't suggest going without a sway bar... especially on the highway. (Even if you dont' do a "lot" of highway driving). And if you must, be really careful!

And yes, the Jeep community is awesome. I too come from a long list of sports cars and their communities are never this helpful.

Iceman If the jeep handles well enough let it go untill you can afford disconnects. If not the stock links are l like ~$15-$16 from Auto-zone. When I broke my first one that's what I had to do, the second one broke at a more financially convenient time lol. I would recommend the jks discos when and if possible.

Bpoch 1st I want to say how awesome the Jeep community is. I drove a Camaro for 18 years before it finally died and with sports cars everybody is always pointing out how much better there's is. Having a Jeep, everybody is cool and always willing to help out. Makes me feel like I wasted 18 years in a sports car.

I have no idea how long this has been broken. For all I know it's been like this for awhile. I don't do a ton of highway driving. At this point I think I'm going to go disconnects when I have the money, it's a little tight right now, so I'll drive around with it like this for a week or so.

I assume the Jeep motto is "if it breaks, upgrade it" I guess a bonus until I get it fixed is if I do manage to find some trails in MD, I'm already disconnected.

I don;t disagree. i had the same thing happen to mine as OP (I broke mine wheeling it at Jeep Jam) and didn;t even realize it for a couple days (passenger side was still in, drivers side did what his did). When i saw it, I lifted the bumper up while a buddy moved the bar back underneath, and drove it around like that for almost a month. Road driving won't mess with it, he can just pop the ball back in the socket and ride around like that until he gets a new one.

I got new ones with my teraflex lift, so i just waited until i put that on.

This is true but I would replace them with JKS or similar in the length you would need if you plan on lifting your Jeep.

Maybe. Stock links are crap. His Jeep is stock, and his links broke. Mine had a 2"BB at the time, and mine broke...on the street after hitting a bump.

Wheeling is 90% driver. I've seen stock and mildly lifted Jeeps with an experienced driver do some pretty amazing things.

Reznor Some disconnects are adjustable. Ideally, you want to keep the ends of the sway bar even with the ground. If you're a little off it won't hurt anything though. With only a 2" lift you could get away with stock links, so you need to decide if you're going to do moderate offroading or not. And if so, I'm not certain a 2" lift is enough. If not, then you probably don't need disconnects in the first place.

TJDave Check the vendor specs on their discos. They each have ranges for the amount of lift, and some are adjustable.
When I broke my stock links, I went with Teraflex discos. I had a 2"bb at the time, and knew I would be going with a 3" lift later.
I wouldn't waste money on replacing those stock links...even if you never plan on disconnecting your sway bar.

Bpoch If I go disconnects, do they have to be a certain size? I haven't really decided what direction I want to go with this in the future as far as a lift, but I'm 80% sure I'm going to go with a 2" BDS coil lift and stick with the 265/75/16 tire.

Zinger Yup - OEM style links can be found inexpensively if you check around. Maybe even free from someone who has lifted their rig.
